Dear Jay, Please allow me to briefly recap. Carl DeGroot, my grandfather, is the son of Barney/Bernard DeGroot & Christine/Christina Hermans. Christine died shortly after my Grandpa was born & Barney married Christine's sister Catherine Hermans.
Christine was born in Maasbree, Limburg, Netherlands. Catherine was born in DePere, WI. Christine & Catherine Hermans' parents are Carl/Charles Hermans & Jacoba/Cora Jacobs. I found the name Cora on 2 documents, one of Christine's & one of Catherine's. Mom remembered the name Jacoba & the name Jacobs when she heard them. Maasbree is only about 30 miles from Reek, North Brabant, Netherlands where Henry DeGroot (father to Bernard) was from.
My notes on Carl Hermans are as follows:
According to Karen DeGroot's information Carl's name is actually "Cornelis".
According to relevant information in the Brown County Marriage Record of Christine Hermans to Bernardus DeGroot
      (Vol# 11 page# 87 - other #s pertaining to this record are 518 & Registration# 90):
"Name of Wife's Mother Before Marriage: Jacoba Jacobs"
"Name of Wife's Father: Charles Hermans"
"Wife's Place of Birth: Holland, Limburg"
"Name of Husband's Mother Before Marriage: Petronella Verstraten"
"Name of Husband's Father: Henry DeGroot"
"Husband's Place of Birth: DePere, Wisconsin"
      "Husband's Occupation: Farmer"
      "Type of Cermony: Catholic"
Pertinent Dates in this Record Entry:
Date of Certificate: April 29, 1892
Date of Marriage: April 29, 1892
Date of Registration: May 17, 1892.
I am confident that this Brown County Marriage Record is indeed that of my Greatparents as I already knew from existing family records that the parents of "Bernard" DeGroot are Petronella Verstraten & Henry DeGroot who came to America from Holland and that he was a farmer who born in DePere, WI. Also Bernard DeGroot was solidly rooted in the Catholic Faith.
According to relevant information in the Marinette County Death Registration of Christina Hermans DeGroot (Vol# 3 page# 252):
      Her Mother is: Cora Hermans
      Her Father is: Carl Hermans
      Her Husband is: Bernard DeGroot
Her Place of Birth is: Holland
Her Mother's Place of Birth is: Holland
Her Father's Place of Birth is: Holland
Her Date of Birth is: November 12, 1866
Her Date of Death is: July 29, 1901
      Her Residence is: Wausaukee, Wisconsin
Her Burial Place is: Wausaukee, Wisconsin
The spelling of Christina's Mother's first name was most assuredly "Cora" however, I wonder whether she took the name Cora in later years or if it was mistakenly transcribed on entry and should have read "Coba" as the letters B & R could be easily mistaken when written in capital form.
I am confident that this Death Registration is indeed that of my Great Grandmother "Christine" Hermans DeGroot (as the family refers to her) as I already knew from existing family records that her husband is Bernard DeGroot and that she is buried in the DeGroot Family Plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Wausaukee, Wisconsin. I have visited this grave with my mother, grandmother & uncle. The dates listed on this headstone for "Christine" are 1866 - 1901.
I did not have time to research the Birth Records of Brown County, Wisconsin.
According to relevent information in the Brown County Marriage Record of Anna C. Hermans to Bernard DeGroot
      (Vol# 12 page# 380 Registration# 61):
"Name of Wife's Mother Before Marriage: Cora Jacobs"
"Name of Wife's Father: ? Hermans"
(This first name is written in cursive & unclear. The period indicates that it is an abbreviation possibilities are: Clus. Clos. Chrs. Ches. Chis. Chls.)
"Wife's Place of Birth: DePere, Wisconsin"
"Name of Husband's Mother Before Marriage: Nellie Verstraatrn"
"Name of Husband's Father: Henry DeGroot"
"Husband's Place of Birth: DePere, Wisconsin"
      "Husband's Occupation: Farmer"
      "Husband's Residence: Wausaukee, Wisconsin"
"Husband's Place of Birth: DePere, Wisconsin"
      "Type of Cermony: Catholic"
Pertinent Dates in this Record Entry:
Date of Certificate: February 23, 1903
Date of Marriage: February 23, 1903
Date of Registration: February 25, 1903
Other interesting entries in this Brown County Marriage Record are:
      Place of Marriage: Wausaukee, Wisconsin
      Additional Circumstances: February 14, 1903
I believe this to be the marriage record of my Great Grandfather Bernard DeGroot to his second wife Catherine Hermans. Catherine is the sister of Bernard's first wife Christine, who died in 1901 in Marinette County, WI. In this Brown County Marriage Record, the name of "Cora Jacobs" as Anna C.'s mother matches the name of Christina Hermans' mother in Christina's Marinette County Death Record. As I mentioned earlier, I still think it possible that the name "Cora" could have been mistakenly transcribed in both records. I also believe it's probable that Anna C.'s father's first name was intended to be an abbreviation for Charles, as written in Christine's Brown County Marriage Record. As for Bernard's mother, Petronella easily translates into Nellie.
The "Place of Marriage" is truly interesting, since Wausaukee is in Marinette County, yet this is a Brown County Marriage Record. My Great Grandfather, Bernard, was living in Wausaukee at the time of his marriage to Catherine Hermans. I wonder whether the "Additional Circumstances" of February 14, 1903 could be a Civil Ceremony in Wausaukee which was followed by a Catholic Ceremony in DePere on February 23, 1903. I did not go back far enough in the Marinette County Marriage or Birth Records to make this determination. However, I was given the marriage date of February 23, 1903 by Judith DeGroot (wife of Charles DeGroot, 2nd cousin to my mother). Where Judith obtained this date, I do not know. All in all, I am reasonably certain that this is the Marriage Record of my Great Grandfather to his second wife, Catherine Hermans (sister of Bernard's first wife, Christine). Finding Catherine's Brown County Birth Certificate will answer much.
According to relevent information in the Brown County Certificate of Death for Catherine DeGroot (Vol# 48 page# 383):
      Her Status is: Widowed
      Her Mother is: Jacoba Jacobs
      Her Father is: Carl Hermans
Her Place of Birth is: DePere, Wisconsin
Her Mother's Place of Birth is: Holland, Europe
Her Father's Place of Birth is: Holland, Europe
Her Date of Birth is: January 5, 1881
Her Date of Death is: January 2, 1946
Her Residence is: Wausaukee, Marinette County, Wisconsin
Her Burial Place is: Wausaukee Cemetery
Her Burial Date is: January 5, 1946
The Informant is: Mrs. Anton J. Edelbeck of Wausaukee, WI
I am certain this is the Death Certificate of Catherine Hermans DeGroot, 2nd wife to my Great Grandfather Bernard DeGroot & sister to his 1st wife Christine Hermans DeGroot. My Catherine Hermans DeGroot is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in the DeGroot Family Plot. Her headstone reads "Catherine" with the the dates of 1881 - 1946. To my family's knowledge, Evergreen is the only cemetery in Wausaukee. My Catherine Hermans DeGroot raised her sister's daughter, Caroline, who married Anton J. Edelbeck & lived in Wausaukee.
I find it more than coincidence that the parents for Anna C./Catherine Hermans DeGroot and for Christine/Christina Hermans DeGroot play off each other in their Marriage & Death Registrations: Carl/Charles/Clus. Hermans & Cora/Jacoba Jacobs Hermans.
According to Kaukauna & Fox Cities Families Carl Hermans was born in the Netherlands.
NAME: The Marinette County Certificate of Death for his daughter, Christina, records her parents as Carl Hermans & Cora Hermans.
The Brown County Marriage Registration of his daughter, Christina, records her parents as Charles Hermans & Jacoba Jacobs.
The Brown County Marriage Registration of his daughter, Anna Catherine, records her parents as, what looks like, Clus. Hermans & Cora Jacobs. I believe this to be an abbreviation for Cornelius.
The Brown County Certificate of Death for his daughter, Catherine, records her parents as Carl Hermans & Jacoba Jacobs.
According to Kaukauna & Fox Cities Families by Jay at , his name is Carl Hermans.
According to the information of Karen DeGroot his name is Cornelis HERMENS.
I have in family records only seen the spelling of this surname as HERMANS.
Sister Dorothy records the name Carl.
I believe Carl to be short for Cornelius. I would guess that Charles is an Americanized version of his name.
