William Ferguson Heckrodt passed away peacefully at St. Elizabeth's Hospital after a brief illness caused by a fall, on Saturday, May 12, with family members at his side. Bill was born in Menasha on May 17, 1920. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison in the School of Mechanical Engineering. After living in Midland, Michigan, where he was employed at Dow Chemical and Dow Corning, he returned to the Menasha area in 1968 to take up a senior position with Presto Products. He was always involved in many visionary ventures, such as growing Christmas trees and hybrid poplars and other experiments such as the recycling of plastics. Bill gave generous support to many worthwhile causes including the Waisman Center for Research at the University of Wisconsin, the Appleton Performing Arts Center, the Heckrodt Wetland Reserve, and the Boy Scouts of America as well as supporting a number of other groups and individuals. Among his many accomplishments, becoming an Eagle Scout was one of his life's most cherished achievements. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Bettyjo. He is survived by his children: Kristen Ann Courtney (Jack) and Roger Val Heckrodt (Barbara), his seven grandchildren, Jamey and Melissa Courtney and Aaron, Will, Anna, Luke and Jesse Heckrodt, as well as eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by two sisters: Elizabeth and Charlotte, and his brother, Frank. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sarah. The family would like to thank Tom Zdrazil and the kind caregivers who made it possible for Bill to enjoy his beautiful home until his hospitalization. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2007, at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 1511 Nicolet Blvd in Neenah, with Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will follow the service.
