  Smits, John G.John G. Smits, 81, of Green Bay, died March 28, 2004. He was born on Octob er 2, 1922 to the late John and Mary Smits. John married the former Margar et Surplice, September 22, 1945 at St. Willebrord Catholic Church. He serv ed in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946, during World War II.John was employed by Paper Converting Machine Company for 47 years until h is retirement in 1987. He served on the Green Bay City Council for 6 yea rs and on the committee that built the Brown County Veteran’s Memorial Are na. He was a member of the Original Green Bay Boy’s Choir for over 25 yea rs and was an active member of St. Willebrord Catholic church and attend ed daily. John enjoyed playing golf, woodworking, stamp collecting, puzzle s, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He will be remember ed as a loving husband, father and grandfather who was very devoted to h is family and took great pride in all of their accomplishments.Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Margaret; his children, Cat herine (Michael) Herbner, Green Bay; Steve (Ginger) Smits, Western Spring s, IL; Dave Smits (special friend Tina Cisler), Green Bay; and Pete (Colle en) Smits, Green Bay. Grandchildren, Aaron Herbner, Michelle (Tom) Eler t, Sara and John Smits, Hannah and Emily Smits. Brother and sister-in-la w, Bill (Marie) Smits and his sister Gertrude Van Derven. Nieces and nephe ws.He was preceded in death by his siblings, Albert and Bernard Smits, Mar ie Thyes, Marge Hettmann, and sister-in-law, Emily Ann Stricklin.Friends may call at Proko-Wall Funeral Home & Crematory, 1630 E. Mason S t. from 4-8 p.m. Monday. Parish Wake Service 7 p.m. Monday at the funer al home. There will be no visitation prior to the service Tuesday. Ma ss of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Willebrord Catholic Churc h, 209 S. Adams St. with the Rev. Kenneth De Groot, O.Praem officiating. E ntombment in Allouez Catholic Mausoleum.In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established. The family wou ld like to express a special thank you to all the wonderful nurses who car ed for John at the Intensive Care Unit at St. Vincent Hospital.
