  SOUTH KAUKAUNA TIMES. January 5, 1906 AGED OLD MAN DIES Louis Mangold Passes Away at St. Elizbeth's Hospital. WAS AN OLD SETTLER. Resident of Calumet County For Forty Years.---Life's Help Meet Died Five Years go and He Has GraduallyFailed Since "Another of Kaukauna's venerable and respected citizens has gone to his last long home. On New Years day Louis Mangold, aged 82 years, 10 months and 21 days, died at St. Elizabeth's hospital at Appleton, where he had been tenderly cared for by his daughter, Miss Anna Mangold, who was with him every day, and nursed by the Sisters of that institution. Mr. Mangold has steadily declined in health since the death of his beloved wife two years age last April, and for the past two months and a half has been confined to his bed requiring such constant care that it was thought best to place him in the charge of the hospital attendants to help lighten the burden on his daughter's hands who was alone with him at their home on Main Avenue. Louis Mangold was born in the province of Alsace, Germany, which was French territory and was taken by the Germans in 1871. When nine years of age he came with his mother to America and settled in Indiana, later removing to Massilon, Ohio, where he met Miss Mary Spinherny, to whom he was married in 1846 at the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. They removed in 1848 to St. Louis, Mo., until 1850, when they came to Wisconsin and kept store at Eden in Fond du Lac county until 1863, when they settled at Sherwood, where he purchased a farm and where nearly all their large family of ten children were born and raised. Eight years ago last month they came to Kaukauna to reside. Five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Mangold, together with all of their nine children, met here and celebrated the fifty-fifth anniversary of their marriage. It was a specially happy event as it was the first time in from fifteen to twenty years that several of them had met each other and their parents. This venerable couple had then peacefully passed the 77th mile post of a happy life time (they were born the same year but a few days apart) and the event was one always to be cherished. Mr. and Mrs. Mangold were esteemed by those who best knew them longest at the home in Sherwood where they resided about forty years, for their many excellent traits of character. Their hospitality was proverbial and the death of the last one of this venerable couple will be deeply regretted in the two counties where they are so well known.It is very seldom in this life, where all its events are so deeply involved in the rush which is sweeping us all along to the end that two people like this revered couple can be found who have enjoyed so long and peaceful a journey together, and who have raised to manhood and womanhood so large and fine a family of sons and daughters. Surviving are his children as follows: Frank A. Mangold of Gervais, Oregon; Mrs. Mary C. Heder of Milwaukee; L.J. Mangold of Marshfield; Martin B. Mangold of Stewart, Minn.; John V. Mangold of Kaukauna; Emil A. Mangold, Muscogee, Indian Territory; S.A. Mangold, Wausaukee; George E. Mangold, Racine; Miss Anna Mangold, Kaukauna. The pallbearers were James Dougherty, Nic Haupt, Jos. Kuehn, Emery Creviere, Barney Verfuerth and Alex Stoeger." (NOTE: There are many inaccuracies in the above obituary.)
