  Word reached this city Tuesday that Theodore Kersten had passed away at this home at Crivitz on Monday evening, Sept. 14th, after a prolonged illness at the age of seventy-two years. The body was brought to this city by relatives, old neighbors and friends and escorted to St. Mary's Catholic Church, where Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by his son, Rev. Fr. Theodore Kersten of Meeme, assisted by Rev. Fr. L. N. Thelen as deacon, Rev. Fr. Geo. A. Clifford as sub-deacon and Fr. John Rollinger of Wausau as master of ceremonies. The passing of Theodore Kersten marks the departure of one who for many years was a leading citizen of Chilton and was prominently identified with the advancement of Calumet County. He was born in Germany July 3, 1842, and in 1855 he accompanied his parents to America. They came direct to Wisconsin, landing at Green Bay, where they remained a short time and then moved into the woods in the town of Woodville. The family remained there until 1861, when they purchased a larger tract in the town of Brillion and moved onto the same. The father died in 1862 and the care of the family then rested on the shoulders of Theodore, who was the eldest son. He experienced all the hardships of pioneer days in clearing the land of the heavy timber and converting it into a productive farm. Money in those days being scarce, he spent seven winters working in the woods and sawmills of northern Wisconsin and Michigan, returning before seeding time to assist his brothers in tilling the small clearing which they had and doing other work on the farm. His educational advantages were limited, but he managed to obtain a reasonable share of practical knowledge, his principal school being that of experience, and he steadily advanced in prominence. In the early days of the town of Brillion he was elected town clerk and held the office four years. In 1868 he was elected county clerk of three terms until 1875, when in company with his brother, the late Henry Kersten, he established what was known as the Germany Exchange Bank in this city. The project was a success from the start and Mr. Kersten was recognized as a shrewd, conservative banker and business man. In the latter part of the nineties the bank made some bad loans as the result of which it closed its doors in 1901. The story of that period of Mr. Kersten's life and the settlement of the affairs of that bank is well known to The Times readers. Shortly after going out of business here Mr. Kersten moved to Crivitz and engaged in the real estate business, in which he was doing fairly well until some three years ago when he suffered a stroke of paralysis and he failed gradually until death, the past six months of his life being practically helpless, requiring the constant attention of his daughters and a nurse. During his long residence in Chilton Theodore Kersten was a leader in all public affairs. He was also the recognized leader of the democratic party in this county and was well and favorably known in political circles throughout the state. He was broad minded and liberal, qualities which won and held the confidence of all men whether they agreed or disagreed with him in his views. He was a prominent figure in all political gatherings in the state and was honored by his party with the nomination for state treasurer, being also named for elector at different times. He was a leading factor in St. Mary's Catholic church for many years, dong much toward the advancement of the congregation since its organization in 1878. He is survived by two sons, Frank Kersten of Marinette, Rev. Fr. Theo. Kersten of Meeme, and four daughters, Misses Mary and Hannah of Meeme, Mrs. Carl Swanson and Mrs. Frank Green of Cirvitz, also by two brothers, Peter Kersten of Brillion town and Math Kersten of Rudolph, Wood County, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral.
