  DIES TODAY WHILE SPADING IN HIS GARDEN Charles Allwardt, 91 Veteran Northwestern Employee Is Stricken Suddenly Suffering a heart attack as he toiled with a spade in the garden at the rear of the home, 1225 South Ninth street, shortly before ten o'clock this morning, Charles Allwardt, 91, veteran Northwestern employee, now retired on a pension, died suddenly before he could be removed to the home and physicians summoned. His plight was discovered by Mrs. William Rathsack residing through the block, who noticed Mr. Allwardt toppel over while he was engaged in preparing the garden for spring planting. Mr. Allwardt had arisen as usual this morning and remarked that he felt very spry. After breakfast he decided that he would do some outside work in the garden which had been delayed by the long rainy spell. His sudden death followed a few minutes later. Came Here 61 Years Ago The deceased was born in Germany 91 years ago and he came to America when 30 years of age. He settled in this city and was married here the next year to Caroline Miller, who passed away in August 1938. He entered the employ of the railroad here as a car repairer which position he continued to fill for 34 years when he retired on a pension. Since he retired he has been making his home with his son, John on South Ninth street. Three sons, John of the city and Charles and George of Green Bay and three grand children survive. Funeral services will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:30 from the home at 1225 South Ninth street and at two o'clock from the German Lutheran church. Manitowoc Herald News, April 18, 1930 P. 1
