    Biography
    • Remembrances of Donna Holschuh Haanen about Adam Holzschuh
I remember my grandfather coming to visit us. One time he installed a dea dbolt lock in the door for us, and he also taught me to play the card ga me Sheepshead. Grandpa made his own wine, and when we visited the fa rm he would serve it very formally on a tea cart, regular glasses of wi ne for the adults, and tiny glasses for the children, which made us fe el very grown-up. He was a very gentle, soft spoken man whom everyone lov ed and admired. During conversations with my Dad and uncles, they recall ed how he ran the farm, and how he always knew what the boys were doing, a nd gave quiet guidance to them in their developing years.
When he died during WW II, the wake was held at the family home in t he country. During the wake there was a practice air raid, which mea nt that all lights were to be extinguished; however, the candles burni ng around the casket were kept lit, and soon an air warden appeared, aski ng why there were lights in the house, and sternly warning us how they wo uld guide an enemy plane to its target!

A Country Wedding The wedding on May 12, 1896 that united Mary Sophia Nytes, oldest liv ing daughter of Anton and Josephine Bock Nytes of the Town of Wilson wi th Adaam Holzschuh, the son of John George and Anna Maria Holzschuh of Fi ve Corners was a joyous occasion indeed; the accompanying photo which h as been carefully preserved by the family for almost 100 years is a viv id record of that happy event. The bride and groom had known each other since childhood, as both we re born, and had spent their lives in this community; Mary, age 22, and A dam, age 29, exchanged vows in St. George's Church in Oostburg before F r. John Blum. Witnesses, according to the church records were Kathering N ytes, the bride's cousin, and George Holzschih, the groom's brother, but t he photo shows several other attendants who have not been positively ident ified. The second attendant is either the bride's younger brother, Augus t, or her cousin Michael Buechler; most probably the two little flower gi rls are her sisters Rose and Annie, and the boy with the flower seated ne ar them may be Matthias, her youngest brother. Preparations for the reception at the bride's home must have begun lo ng before the nuptual day. The pillars on the front porch were festoon ed with flowers and vines to provide a suitable from for the couple's wedd ing pictures. Neighborhood women and friends of the family had no doubt b een working since early morning roast the home-raised meats, potatoes, a nd vegetables for the wedding feast. In addition to the home baked bread s, rolls, and desserts, accounts of the time list pickled fruits, chees es and homemade sausages as typical party fare. The cooks stand in attend aance in the photo, in their place of honor next to the groomsmen, holdi ng the tools of their trade, dishes and coffeepots, to document their cont ribution to the success of the event. The coquettish waitresses to the f ar left are the bride's friends, bedecked in frilly aprons made by the bri de for the occasion, and receiving their share of attention from several y oung male admirers. The bride's father and uncles stand behind the wedding party, but the c ouple's mothers, with aunts and sisters, are in the top row of the pictur e. Josephine Nytes holds her youngest child, Josephine Clara, age two. T he many children all beautifully dressed for the party, attest to the pri de and care which were lavished on them by loving parents. Mary and Adam Holzschuh lived with the Nytes family until after the bir th of their oldest son, Anton, who was baptized in St. George's church wi th his grandmother, Anna Maria Holzschuh, and his grandfather, Anton Nyte s, as his godparents. Then Anton, Sr. lent the young couple the mon ey to buy a farm in Hollandtown, Wisconsin, where the rest of their sev en sons, Edward, Irwin, Elmer, Leo, Herbert, and Harvey, were born. The Ho llandtown farm is still in the family, having been farmed in turn by Ada m, Harvey, and now Harvey's son, Clifford. Many other descendants also st ill live in nearby communities.
