  C. E. RAUGHT. Recognizing the fact that on the journalistic field there is plenty of room for men with brains and vim, the young man whose name appears at the beginning of this article has chosen for his calling the newspaper profession, with what degree of success is shown in his present well-kept establishment and the excellent business he enjoys. Mr. Raught is a son of Dr. G. M. and Jane (Slover) Raught, and was born in 1866 at Neenah, Winnebago Co. Wis., whence, when twelve years of age, he came with his parents to Kaukauna. He was educated at the public schools of these places, and in 1881 entered the office of the Kaukauna Times as office boy, at small wages. By close application to business, and his aptitude as a printer, he worked upward through the various positions connected with the office until, in 1885, he became associated as a partner in the publication of the paper. The first number of the Times was issued September 11,1880, by Hopkins & Cates, and a few months later Mr. Hopkins died. The surviving publisher afterward sold to H. A. Stone, of Neenah, who in turn disposed of the plant to E. C. Bidwell, of Kaukauna. In 1885 a half interest was purchased by Mr. Raught, who, upon the death of Mr. Bidwell in 1887, bought the remaining interest, and has since continued as sole proprietor. A well-equipped job printing office is operated, as well as a book bindery. In place of the original hand press, three fine power cylinder presses have been placed in the office, and the paper has increased its circulation to 1,200 through the untiring efforts of its editor and publisher. Himself an active. earnest Republican, Mr. Raught has built up his paper on the fundamental principles of that great party, and it is recognized as an organ of no mean ability. In 1891 he erected a fine residence on the North side, and is the happy possessor of a model home. In the same year he was married to Miss Minnie Claspill. He has served two years as alderman from the Fifth ward, and is prominent in society circles. Socially he is chancellor commander of Fox River Lodge, No. 90, K, of P., and a member of Kaukauna Lodge, No. 233, F. &. A. M. Both Mr. and Mrs. Raught attend the services of the Congregational Church, and their future is bright and full of promise.

  CHARLES E. RAUGHT, editor and proprietor of the Kaukauna Times, has been identified with the printing business since he was fourteen years of age, during which period, however, he has never become separated from the office wherein he started. He was born at Neenah, Winnebago county, Wisconsin, March 15, 1867, a son of George M. and Jane (Slover) Raught, and is descended on the paternal side from early Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry, and maternally is of French lineage, his mother's grandfather having been a general under Napoleon Bonaparte and who, after the decisive defeat of his worshipped leader at Waterloo in 1815, left France and sailed for America, becoming what was afterwards known as a "York Stater." George M. Raught was born in the east and came to Wisconsin with his parents when a boy, his early days being spent on the farm. He was a soldier for the Union during the Civil War having enlisted August 29, 1863, in the First Wisconsin Heavy Artillery, and received his honorable discharge from the service at Nashville, Tennessee, September 21, 1865. Returning home after the war he took up the trade of paper maker and was one of the pioneers in this line, having been employed in the first paper mill built in the Fox River Valley. During his boyhood Charles E. Raught attended the public schools and when yet in early youth worked in a stave factory from 6 in the morning until sundown for 37½ cents per day, and when pay day came around he felt like a banker at that. In 1881, on the day that the remains of the martyred President Garfield were laid to rest, he became an apprentice in a Kaukauna printing office, his first pay being at the rate of $2.00 per week. With diligence he mastered the details of the "art preservative," and at the end of the first year was placed in charge of the mechanical department of the plant. In 1885, owing to the fact that back wages were not forthcoming, he was offered and accepted an interest in the printing establishment to square accounts. In 1887 his partner departed this life and upon taking financial inventory of the place it was found that the assets of the plant would not quite offset the liabilities. Undaunted by the apparent loss, Mr. Raught set about to reorganize the concern, and having won the confidence of the patrons of the office and the men of means of the city, was successful in keeping the paper and the plant running - no issue of the paper having ever been missed, a new firm known as C. E. Raught & Co. being organized with Col. H. A. Frambach, president of the First National Bank, lending his name and financial support as the company end of the concern. In a few years The Times establishment was placed on a safe and sure footing and Mr. Raught assumed the sole ownership and management, which he still continues. He is a republican in political belief and shortly after attaining his majority was elected alderman from his ward, serving as such for ten years, then following as mayor of Kaukauna for the subsequent six years. In 1898 he was appointed postmaster of South Kaukauna by President McKinley and was twice reappointed by President Roosevelt, serving in all three terms or twelve years in the postal service. In many ways Mr. Raught has been closely identified with the commercial, educational and social growth of Kaukauna and Outagamie county. He is a director in the First National Bank and in the Kaukauna Building and Loan Association, and is connected with all of the local organizations looking toward the growth of his city. He is a member of the Masonic, Knights of Pythias, Elks and Eagles fraternities, having served as master of the former lodge for seven years. In 1891, Mr. Raught was married to Miss Minnie Claspill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Claspill, and they have one daughter, Grace, born May 26, 1898.
