  Doris "Dorie" Mae Nickel Age 88, of Hortonville, went to her heavenly home on Monday, December 1, 2014 at Fox River Nursing and Rehab in Appleton. She was born on November 27, 1926 on the Lenzner Homestead in Hortonville. She was the daughter of the late Lothar & Emma (Meyer) Lenzner. Dorie was a faithful member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hortonville her entire life. Dorie had a great work ethic, which began at a very young age. Her father owned the "L. Lenzner" dairy farm. They delivered milk door-to-door with a team of horses. When the snow was so deep that the horses couldn't pull the load of milk up the hill, Dorie and her sister Gertrude would walk thru the snow up the hill with the bottles, while their dad stayed with the horses below. She was a dedicated employee at the Hortonville Wire Products Co. for many years. In a July 1974 newspaper article it mentioned that she was probably the only woman in the country who was employed as a nail die maker. On December 28, 1977 she was united in marriage to Edson Nickel Sr. There were 8 grown-up step-children. They were married for 17 years breeding and raising Purebred Belgium Draft horses. Dorie loved taking care of them, especially the new foals. Edson preceded her in death in September of 1994. Dorie was a great cook and baker, with pies being her specialty - with home-made, melt in-your mouth crusts. She made each one with love and was very generous in giving them away. In her younger years she enjoyed the basketball games in Hortonville with her life-long friend, Bernice Boetcher. She is survived by her sister-in-law Ramona Lenzner, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Gertrude Peebles and brother-in-law Charles Peebles, her brother Wallace Lenzner, also a very dear friend, Owen Olk, and her sweet black lab, Max. If Dorie was in her truck, so was Max. The Christian Funeral for Doris will be held on Friday, December 5, 2014 at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hortonville with Rev. Ralph Rosenberg officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Hortonville. A visitation for Doris will be held directly at the church on Friday from 9:30 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran School. A special thank you to the staff at Fox River Nursing & Rehab and to the staff at Affinity Visiting Nurses Hospice for their care and comfort.
