  Born in Prussia, November 26, 1838; married in 183 to Lena Vogel, who was born in Prussia in 1840. They came to Appleton in 1866. Their children are as follows: Clara, born in September, 1868; Leopold, born in May, 1870, and died December 23, 1888; Stella, born in March, 1872; Walter F., born in January, 1874; Gertrude, born in November, 1875; Celia, born in April, 1878; Samuel H., born in July, 1880; Leroy T., born in 1882. Occupation, dealer in cattle and horses; office and stables on Oneida street, next block north of post office. Residence, corner of North and Durkee street, Appleton.

  From Appleton Library Photo Collection description; Democrat, He was elected twice for single year terms, then the term of office was changed to 2 years. Municipal ownership or private ownership of the waterworks was the main issue of the day, since the contract with the private company would soon expire. A series of injunctions and court actions ensued, by both the city and the Appleton Water Works company. No settlement was reached before the end of the term. Public debt was another issue. Hammell cut much city spending. Construction of the stone John Street bridge was begun. The public library and city hall, housed in one building, were dedicated in 1900. Main power house of the electric company burned down. Building a $30,000 opera house was planned. An automobile craze held the city in 1901. After retiring, he moved to Austin, MN where he sold horses, then moved to Chicago, IL.

  FUNERAL AT APPLETON - Mr. and Mrs. Max Wirth left this morning for Appleton to attend the funeral of the former's brother-in-law, David F. Hammel, who died at his home in this city Monday afternoon. The Appleton Crescent contained, in part, the following in regard to the deceased: "Mr. Hammel was a native of Appleton, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hammel. For a number of years he had been a member of the firm of Marshall & Hammel and under the aldermanic system he represented the Second ward in the city council.
