  Family History Researcher	Note: John and Marie met through the friendship of their fathers who were both members of the Wisconsin Assembly. As a young man, John owned a team of horses and went north in the winter to work in the woods. The Military road ran through De Pere and he followed it north to the Wolf River to work some land a neighbor from Wrightstown had purchased at Monica. When he was married his father gave him 80 acres and a horse. The Dewanes furnished the house and John bought the land at Pratt Junction in the fall of 1887. There was a hotel on the land near a railroad junction. It burned in 1892, but John rebuilt it and ran it until 1903 when he bought another store and saloon in Pelican Lake. In 1901 the railroad had built a branch line at Crandon and the trains were operated from Pelican. The depot at Pratt junction was closed. John bought half-section of land and prepared it to farm while the business at Pelican Lake was run by his sons, William and Dennis. In 1914 he turned his business interests over to his sons, Dennis and John as William had left to attend Medical College. John Edward never owed a cent to anyone. His word was his bond and he was well known for his integrity. He held many public offices and was the postmaster at Pratt Junction for twelve years.
