  Orlen (Orly) Kenneth Vollbrecht passed away peacefully at Brewster Village on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 surrounded by his family and the exceptional Brewster Village staff. Orly was born on August 26, 1924 to Adolph and Elizabeth Vollbrecht at their farm in Bear Creek, Wisconsin. He attended school in Bell Corners and graduated from Clintonville High School. Orly married Betty Hagen on August 17, 1946. They enjoyed 68 years together before her passing in June, 2015. They lived in Clintonville in the early years of their marriage and eventually moved to Appleton where they raised their family. They had eight children together and suffered the loss of two sons, Gary and Todd. Their surviving children are Patty Vollbrecht, Jan (Scott) Gilbertson, Danny (Dawn) Vollbrecht, Cheryl (John) Krueger, Lori (Scott Newling) Hanke, and Lisa (Dave) Haferbecker, in addition to their grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Eric (Kelly) Lund with Addison and Kyla; Steven and Janelle Lund with Eleanor Marie, Erica Jordan with Victor and Val Mohaugen; Stephanie (Mike) with Chase and Amelia; Belle and Jessica Krueger, Katelyn (Travis) Flatoff with Eli, and Samantha Haferbecker with Kane and (Fiancé - Justin Jatczak). Orly - husband, dad, brother, son, grandpa and great-grandpa, friend, craftsman, amateur pilot, singer, dancer, storyteller and the keeper of knowledge about life and all things. Dad was the consummate doer and fixer and his "honey do" list traveled with him when we moved from house to house. He could build or fix anything. His mind measured and calculated while his hands brought life to wood - building bookshelves and mantles, decks and garages or turning spindles on the lathe. His skill for fixing or building came from growing up on the farm - whether it was fixing an old tractor left to rust behind the barn or building a go-cart from whatever he could salvage. Dad was a most gentle and loving man who never judged people. We will miss so much about him - his genuine belly laugh, his sparkling eyes, his "Fa-la-la-la-la" at Christmas, his modified polka dance moves to all music, his often told jokes and lyrics but most of all - his story telling. At 92 years of age, Dad's mind was young and sharp, but his body just wouldn't do the things he wanted to do anymore. He did not get locked into his age. His voice shared his excitement of events from long ago. It is rare to see people as they see themselves - and he shared that with us. Dad had various jobs over his lifetime, with his favorites being working at Wisconsin Tissue Mills and Appleton Dental Labs. He gained numerous friends over the years and maintained those friendships during his lifetime. Orlen is preceded in death by his wife, two sons, his siblings Gerald and Mildred and his parents. Family and friends may call on Saturday, April 1, 2017 from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM at Valley Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 PM with Pastor Mary Turner officiating. Orly and Betty's urn will be placed at Graceland Cemetery in Clintonville at a later date. Dad asked that stories be told at the memorial service, so please feel free to share in the celebrations of Orly's life. In lieu of flowers, Dad requested that memorials be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital . The family wants to share their deepest appreciation for the loving and caring personnel at Brewster Village. Though Dad was only there a short time, he expressed his wish that it was where he wanted to take his last breath and they honored him by allowing that to happen.
