Florence M. Bender passed away on July 29, 2007, unexpectedly at the age of 91 years, 8 months. Flos was born Florence Louise Miller in Monroe, Wisconsin, on November 8, 1915. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1933 and went on to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she majored in Physical Education and Physical Therapy. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in 1937 and worked as a physical therapist for the Appleton Public Schools. She was headquartered at Morgan School, where she helped scores of kids stricken with polio and muscular dystrophy to walk and be independent. She continued her work until 1947. In 1945, she married Ray S. Bender, to whom she remained married until his death in 2004. After the birth of her first child, Flos became a stay-at-home mother, but that didn't stop her from working on behalf of handicapped children. She worked tirelessly as a volunteer and, later, as Outagamie County chairman of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, also known as The March of Dimes. Through the efforts of the March of Dimes and other organizations, polio is a disease rarely seen today in the United States. She was also an active and vocal proponent of fluoridating Appleton's drinking water, a controversial proposal at the time, which turned out to be a boon to public health that we all take for granted today. Flos was active in the lives of her children as well. She was a den mother when her son was a Cub Scout and a Brownie leader for her daughter, as well as an active mom in DeMolay. Her famous baked beans were such a hit at Troop 6's annual potluck; they are still talked about today. Flos was an avid and sophisticated football fan, never missed a Packer or Badger game, and enjoyed discussing football with her friends and family. From shortly after her arrival in Appleton, Flos has been a member of the First Congregational Church. She is also a long-time member of The Order of Eastern Star, The Daughters of the American Revolution, and the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association. For the past three years, Flos has been a resident of Touchmark in Appleton, where she has found many friends among peers and staff. To these people — in particular Barb Towne, RN — Flos's family offers its heartfelt thanks for providing a safe, comfortable, and friendly environment for her. She really loved living at Touchmark. Thanks also to special friends Sherry Bassett, Julie Carroll, JoAnn Leddy, and Susan Livengood. Flos was preceded in death by her parents, Charlotte and Howard B. (Burt) Miller; her brother, Stephen Miller; her daughter, Susan; and her husband, Ray. She is survived by her son, Ray Bender, MD (Christina), Mequon, WI, her nieces and their families. Visitation will be at ten AM on Friday, August 3, 2007, and services will be held at eleven AM at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 724 E. South River Street in Appleton. In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of Wisconsin Foundation will be appreciated.
