  Ervin Carl Paul Stern, New London, age 94, died Sunday September 14, 2008, at his residence. He was born on July 19, 1914, in rural New London, son of the late Walter & Wilhelmina (Roos) Stern. On September 25, 1937, he was united in marriage to Florence Johnson. Together, they shared 57 years of marriage until her death in 1994. Erv was a dedicated lifelong member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in New London and was devoted to his family, friends, faith, and community. In earlier years, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He greatly enjoyed flowers, especially his roses; the variety of birds in his backyard, playing golf, spectator sports, and building anything with his own hands, including a complete rebuilding of the family home on Pershing Road. For a time on that property, he also grew and sold Christmas trees; and he and his wife operated "Stern's Hobby House" greenhouse for a number of years. In 1977, Erv retired from his position as manager of the local Borden Foods Company cheese plant, completing more than 42 years of continuing service. He began at Borden's as a general laborer when the plant was producing evaporated milk and progressed to general manager in 1958. He was a representative with the American Dairy Assn., was president of the Dairy Technology Society, and won awards for plant safety and sanitation programs. He was active in New London Industrial Opportunities, was a Red Cross Instructor, president of the Chamber of Commerce, a director of Community Hospital, and was president of the local Aid Association for Lutherans (Thrivent). Ervin also served four terms on the church Board of Education, was a member of the church's Board of Elders, and has been church treasurer and a member of the Stewardship Committee. He was a member and treasurer of the Rotary Club, was named "Outstanding Citizen" by the Jaycees, and was a member and membership chairman of the New London Country Club. At the age of 92 he was recognized at the New London Golf Club for hitting a "hole in one." Besides his wife, Florence, Erv was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gerhardt Stern, his sister Ruth (Stern) Holsen, and a grandson, Steven Kamps. He is survived by his four children: Annette (Jerome) Kamps, Kathleen Stern, Leon (Jan) Stern, and Leonard (Jan) Stern; ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, his sister, Dorothy (Leroy) Ramsdell, his brother, Donald (Ann) Stern, his special friend May Glasenapp, and many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service for Erv will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in New London with Rev. Brian Hennig officiating. Interment will be in the Floral Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Emanuel Lutheran Church in New London and at the church on Thursday from Noon until the time of service.
