  THE LAST ROLL CALL Samuel Vincent, A Member of the Iron Brigade, Answers Final Summons The community mourns the death of one of Calumet County's well known citizens in the passing of Samuel Vincent, many years a prominent county official and always a loyal, true and conscientious man. He had friends without number throughout the county and far beyond its limits, all of whom share the sorrow in his passing and testify to his irreproachable character and sterling manhood. Outspoken in his opinion and relentless in exposing hypocrisy, he was nevertheless as sympathetic as a woman when in the presence of sorrow or trouble. He was generous and impulsive, always placing himself second in considerations and woe to the man who had the temerity to vilify a friend in his presence. These characteristics, seldom combined in a man, made his exceedingly lovable and companionable. The following obituary is from the pen of his brother-in-law, Lieut. Colonel J. A. Watrous, who was his boyhood companion and a comrade in the Iron Brigade: Samuel J. Vincent died at his late home, Hayton, town of Charlestown, on Wednesday, November 14, 1917, after an illness extending over a year. The funeral occurred Saturday, Nov. 17, and was attended by a large number, nearly every town in the county being represented. Interment was in the Hayton cemetery where other member of his family are buried, the Joseph B. Reynolds Post, GAR of Chilton escorting the body from his home to the grave where he was laid at rest with military honors. Rev. A. T. Dewey of the Presbyterian church of this city had charge of the services at the house and also assisted at the grave. Mr. Vincent was born in Duchess County, New York, in 1842, and hence was seventy-five years of age at the time of his death. In 1854, when twelve years of age he came to Calumet county with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Vincent. Settling in the woods not far from Hayton village, Mr. Vincent and his boys made a model eighty acre farm from what a few years before had been a dense forest. Later it fell to the young Vincent to take the lead in carrying on the farm, and he did it so well that he came to be regarded as a farmer to be patterned after. When the Civil War came he desired to enlist with his associates but duty to his parents, his father being an invalid, rendered it necessary to carry on the farm until a brother reached a proper age, and was equipped with experience sufficient to warrant his assuming charge of the farm. Then Mr. Vincent volunteered and was given his choice of regiments. When he chose the Sixth Wisconsin, in the Army of the Potomac, some of his friends endeavored to get his to decide upon another regiment. Comrades of his in the Sixth speak of Mr. Vincent as an excellent soldier. He was always ready for duty often volunteered for extra hazardous duty, and always acquitted himself as a brave man, He was soon appointed a corporal, and during the closing campaign of the war acted as a sergeant. He participated in the battles of Hatcher's Run, Graveity Run, Five Forks and at Appomattox when Gen. Lee and his army surrendered to Gen. Grant and the Army of the Potomac. He participated in the memorable review of the army in Washington in May, 1865, by President Johnson, General Grant, General Sherman and the president's cabinet. At the end of the war Mr. Vincent returned to the farm where he remained for ten years. The public wanted his services. He held various town offices, was deputy sheriff, sheriff for two years, clerk of the circuit court twenty-four years, and was one of the Federal Government's commissioners to settle damage done to property overflowed by Lake Winnebago because of dams erected at Neenah and Menasha. Mr. Vincent is survived by his widow, who was Demis Watrous, one son, Dr. Henry Vincent, of Perth, Kansas, and two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Carncross of Appleton and Mrs. Herschel B. Smith of Nebraska, and one brother, Michael Vincent of Park Falls, Wisconsin. All were present at the funeral. Samuel Vincent Chilton Times November 24, 1917
