  Wayne Lois Tanner, 90, New London, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Theda Care at Home Hospice Residence in Appleton, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on Sept. 24, 1920, in Clintonville, daughter of the late Awalt and Clara (Herm) Schmidt. On April 4, 1942, she was united in marriage to Russell Tanner. He preceded her in death in 2007. DuWayne's first career was as a Registered Nurse graduating from Cook County School of Nursing in 1943 and began working as a surgical nurse at Shawano Hospital. In 1947, DuWayne and Russell owned a dry cleaning business in Pound, Wis. In 1963, DuWayne became the Clintonville School Nurse and continued her education by completing her Public Health Certification. In 1966, she became the Waupaca County Public Health Nurse and oversaw the growth of that program to over 16 healthcare providers. Upon her retirement in 1986, she and Russell moved to Arizona, where DuWayne took on another career challenge and obtained her realtor's license with many of her clients becoming her longtime friends. While living in Arizona, DuWayne and Russell summered at Bear Lake, Wis., and in 2000 they moved to New London to be closer to their family. DuWayne was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was a true role model, living life to the fullest and enjoying her time with us. She will be missed and long remembered. She is survived by her son, Craig (Judi) Tanner and daughter, Jill (David) Schneider; grandchildren, Scott (Sheri) Tanner, Gwenn (Andy) Radtke, Terra (Lee) Bork; great-grandchildren, Luke, Jared and Grace Radtke, Magnum Bork, Sherra and Selena Prahl, Amber and Aiden Tanner; great-great-grandchild, Jocelyn Westphal. She is further survived by her sister-in-law, Lu Kafka; nieces, nephews and many friends. Besides her husband of 65 years, DuWayne was preceded in death by her grandson, Brad Lee Schneider. A Memorial Service will be held for DuWayne at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at the Cline & Hanson Funeral Home in New London, with the Rev. Lucretia Fehrmann officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be at the Highland Memorial Park in Appleton. The family wishes to thank Pastor Lucretia Fehrmann of the United Methodist Church in New London, her health care providers for their superb services, and the many relatives and friends for their visits, prayers and outings with her.
