  Anton Nytes, a successful agriculturist of Wilson township, who owns o ne hundred and fifteen acres of well improved and fertile land on secti on 30, where he engages in general farming and dairying, is one of the ent erprising and thrifty citizens Germany has contributed to Sheboygan count y. Anton Nytes was born in August, 1841, and is the son of Michael and Jo sephine Nytes, also natives of Germany, who emigrated to the United Stat es in 1846, coming direct to this county. The father, who was an agricult urist, first bought some land just north of St. George which he cultivat ed for several years, then disposing of it he purchased a farm in Lima tow nship, where he was living when he passed away at the age of sixty-five ye ars. As he was a child of only five years when he accompanied his paren ts on their removal to the United States, practically the entire life of A nton Nytes has been passed in the vicinity where he is now residing. He a ttended the district schools of Wilson township in his boyhood, but bei ng a member of a family possesed of only limited means his educational adv antages were meager as his services were required about the farm. Followi ng the death of his father, which occurred when he was a youth of seventee n, he left home and for five years worked as a teamster in the region of L ake Superior. Returning to Sheboygan county he once more took up farm wor k, following this occupation for two years. As he was thrifty and tempera te in his habits he accumulated sufficient money to buy sixty acres of la nd in 1867, and engaged in farming on his own account. Later he extend ed the boundaries of his farm by the addition first of twenty acres and su bsequently of forty, making his holdings aggregate one hundred and twen ty acres, about five of which have since been taken by the railroad and el ectric line. In connection with his general farming for many years Mr. Ny tes owned and operated a threshing outfit not only in Wilson township b ut throughout Sheboygan county, where he is widely known. He is enterpris ing and diligent in everything he undertakes and owns a well cultivated a nd valuable property. In connection with his general farming he has alwa ys raised such stock as was needed about the placeand he also engages in d airying to a certain extent. For his wife and helpmate, Mr. Nytes chose Miss Josephine Bock, the eve nt being celebrated at St. George's Roman Catholic church in Wilson townsh ip, and they have become the parents of thirteen children, six of whom a re deceased. The living are as follows: Michael and August, both of wh om are residing in Kaukauna; Mattie, who is at home; and Mary, the wi fe of Adam Holtshu, also of Kaukauna; Rosa, who married John Kluste r, of Sheboygan; and Anna and Josephine, who are living at home. The family are communicants of the Roman Catholic church, holding membe rship in St. George's parish, Wilson township, and Mr. Nytes is a stanch d emocrat in his political views. He has made his own way from early you th and such success as has come to him in the development of his interes ts is entirely attributable to his own efforts, as he has been favored wi th no assistance other than is accorded every man of recognized worth a nd responsibility."   Anton Nytes and his wife, Josephine Bock, were both children of pionee rs who had come to Sheboygan County fo farm, leaving behind the Motherla nd in Europe because of the political unrest of the 1840's. Anton was bo rn August 4, 1841 in St. Hubert, Westphalia, Prussia, and emigrated at t he age of five with his parents Michael and Josephine Nytes and fami ly in 1846, coming directly to Sheboygan County. His faher first bought s ome land just south of St. George which he cultivated for several years a nd then disposed of it and purchased a farm in Lima township. . . . (sa me as former article) ..His wife, Josephine, was born March 12, 1849 in (East) Prussia and ca me with her parents, Lorenz and Maria Anna Bock, to the United States in J anuary of 1854. The family arrived in the Port of New York and also conti nued on to Wisconsin where Lorenz bought farming land in Lima township. Joseph and Anton were married at St. George's church in Wilson on Ju ly 7, 1868 by Father Patrick Siebold, the first resident pastor of the chu rch, whose cornerstone is dated 1867. The groom's brother, August, and t he bride's sister, Vincenz, were witnesses. The stained gass window whi ch the young couple donated to the newly built church attests to their fai th and support of the new parish; the graves of their children in the chu rchyard cemetery attest as well to their need for that faith to sustain th em in the grief and hardships they endured. Of their thirteen children, s ix died before reaching adulthood. Particularly tragic was the death of f our children in less than a month from an epidemic in 1887 including the ir eldest daughter Julia, age seventeen. A scarce tow years later, you ng Anton, fourteen, died of influenza. Anton increased the size of his farm, until it comprised of 115 acre s. In addition, he woned and operated a threshing outfit not only in Wils on, but throughout Sheboygan County. Threshing time was an exciting and m emorable experience in country life in those days, and the thresher w as a well known person. The spirit of fun and cooperation that prevail ed during that season--with the men, boys and even young children worki ng together to thresh the grain, and the women outdoing themselves in t he kitchen, cooking five meals a day for the crews--provided a lifeti me of memories. The work would be dangerous; Anton lost an arm in a thre shing accident when he was 46, but his descendants all remember him as a p owerful man who, in spite of the accident, could still wrap the reins arou nd the stump of his arm and break the most stubborn, spirited horse. He h ad an inventive nature, and devised a stump-pulling machine to wrest tho se hindrances from the fields of newly harvested forest land. He was a so ciable man whose face appears in many old photos of community gathering s, and he described himself as a staunch democrat in his political persuas ions. In 1875 he and Josephine built a "Milwaukee brick" house on the proper ty inscribing in wrought iron on the front of the building, the date of i ts erection and on the side, his initials. The home on Rt. 3, Van Treek R oad, is now owned by the Phil Kast family. During renovation the Kasks di scovered a miraculous medal which had been embeded in an inner wall, anoth er testament to the devotion and faith of the original occupants. The Nytes children married and settled in surrounding communities. Mich ael and August resided in Kaukauna, Mary (Mrs. Adam Holzschuh) in Hollandt own; Rose (Mrs. John Chlosta) in Sheboygan, and Anna (Mrs. Jacob Jacob y) in Sheboygan; after wife Josephine's death in 1919, Anton lived with h is son Matthew and daughter Josephine in Sheboygan. He spent his time vis iting his children, helping on their farms. His grandchildren remember h im vividly; he always had a word of encouragement for them, and a coin f or each child at the end of his stay. He died in 1924, and is buried wi th Josephine at St. George in Wilson.
