  Britten, Marie J. (nee VerKuilen) KaukaunaAge 83, died peacefully Monday December 9, 2002 at Appleton Medical Cent er with her family by her side following a valiant battle with colon cance r. She was born September 21, 1919 in Oneida, WI daughter of the late Jo hn and Anna (Vande Weyer) VerKuilen. On October 13, 1939 Marie married Ray mond J. Britten, the couple resided in Kaukauna their entire married liv es and enjoyed 60 years of marriage together prior to his death on April 2 3, 2000. She took great pride in washing and ironing for others and was kn own as “Granny Britten” to 52 other children whom she cared for over the y ears up until the day before her diagnosis. Marie enjoyed playing bingo a nd the slot machines. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Kaukau na. Marie is survived by four sons and four daughters-in-law: William (Lei gh), Crooked Lake, Wisconsin; John (Gail), Kaukauna; Don (Terri), Appleto n; Dave (Diane), Bailey, Colorado; Mary Britten, Kaukauna; three daughte rs and two sons-in-law: Rose Britten, Kaukauna; Patricia (Alfred) Hietpa s, Little Chute; Nancy (Jack) Diedrich, Kaukauna; 16 grandchildren, 32 gre at grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters-in-law: George (Marie) Ver Kuilen, Oneida, Elmer (Rosemary) VerKuilen and Gertrude VerKuilen, a ll of Appleton; Ella VerKuilen, Green Bay; Ann VerKuilen, Kaukauna; numero us nieces and nephews. She is further survived by her husband’s brother s: Harold Britten, King and special friends Doris and Eddie Peterson, Waup aca. Marie was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, 2 granddaughter s, Sheila and Mary Britten; four sisters and two brothers-in-law: Anna (Al bert) Van Den Boogart, Christine (William) Hermans, infant sisters Josephi ne and Nellie, eight brothers and three sisters-in-law: Martin (Delia), An ton (Bernice), Jacob, Sylvester (Mary), John, Joseph and infant brothers G regory and George; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nicholas and Kathr ina (Nilles) Britten and in-laws; Matt, Joseph, Nick (Helen), Frank (Gertr ude), Rose (Ralph) Kuehl, Ann (Earl) Brooks and infants Johann and Franci s. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Boettcher Fa mily Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna with Fr. Robert Uduluts ch officiating. Burial will take place in St. Mary Cemetery, Hilbert. Frie nds may call at the funeral home from 4 p.m. Wednesday until the time of s ervices. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her n ame.The family would like to express special thanks to her caregivers especial ly Dr. Kristin Lindgren, Dr. Jeffrey Klingbeil and special neighbors, Alic e, Irene and Rose (Tom). Also thanks to Chris Britten, her grandson, for a lways being there to help her.
