The Osburg Coat of Arms

Wappenbeschreibung:
That sign is divided and in the upper half split. On the top right in silver a red bar cross. Left above in blue, a silver castle with a tower. Down in gold a greener three-mountain with three green firs.
Coat of arms reason:
The red cross in silver is the heraldische landmark of the ore diocese and cure state Trier, to the Osburg from the Middle Ages to end 18th Century belonged. The castle reminds of the former castle Osburg, whose tower is received in
this form today as tower of the modern parish church. The three mountain with the firs refers to the landschaftliche situation of Osburg in the Trier timber forest.

A Short History of Osburg

The area around Osburg was probably already settled around 2000 v.Chr., which can be accepted by the find of a stone hatchet. Among specialists are the 100 hills of the Osburger of grave field from the Hunsrueck Eifel culture (6. to 3. Century v. Chr.) term. The steadiness of the settlement at Roman  time can be assumed from flurnamen. In 7. - 8. Century had Osburg probably already a church. First documentary mention was in the year 940. The name

Osburg is derived possibly from the oldhigh-German "Hotz"=Schutz, thus protection castle. In 13. and 14. Century are testified knights of Osburg. In the dreissigjaehrigen war (1618- 1648) the Osburg was probably destroyed. one built a new church for 1741 in Osburg. 1843 had Osburg of 850 inhabitants. 1869 1055 inhabitants. 1945 was destroyed nearly 80 per cent of the village by American air raids. In November 1958 a new church could be inaugurated, whereby the castle tower of the Osburg serves the church as bell tower and is landmark of the place.
