    Obituary:
    Vander Heiden, Raymond H.
Raymond Vander Heiden, 97, Neenah, passed away at home Thursday, January 22, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Ray was born in the Town of Holland, October 3, 1911, son of the late Bernard and Mary (Coenen) Vander Heiden. Ray grew up on a dairy farm near Wrightstown, where he developed a passion for farming. After marrying Rosella Kerrigan, June 15, 1939, the newlyweds purchased a farm in the Town of Kaukauna. He farmed and transported milk until deciding to work at Van Zeeland Implement Company in 1947. While at Van Zeeland's, he put his remarkable ingenuity to work and invented and produced the first Hay Swatter. The itch to farm never left, however, so Ray and Rosella purchased a large dairy farm in the Town of Clayton, west of Neenah, in 1953. After retiring in 1976, Ray did some traveling and a lot of card playing, but mostly enjoyed helping out others in the family, whether it was constructing a house, building furniture, remodeling, or best of all, helping out on his daughter and son-in-law's farm. He also grew close to the biggest weed-free vegetable garden in the neighborhood.
Ray was very active in the Winnebago County Holstein Breeders Association, the Wisconsin Holstein Association, and the National Holstein Association. He enjoyed raising and managing prize Holstein dairy animals, and volunteered much of his time to these organizations. He was an original member of St. Gabriel Catholic Parish, Neenah, and was a well-known usher for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Rosella; one son, Wayne (Sara) Vander Heiden, Greenville; four daughters: Mary Jane Volkman, Neenah; Joanne (Mike) Norton, Princeton; Donna (Mike) Hadler, Menasha; Sarah (Will) Grotjan, Neenah; 13 grandchildren: Lisa (Erick) Wahlfeld, Greenville; Mike Vander Heiden, Appleton; Rick (Denise) Vander Heiden, Rowlett, TX; Jessica (Tim) Kudzia, Ft. Leonard, MO; John (Amy) Volkman, Neenah; Annie (Mark) Miller, Nashville, TN; Jenna (Rob) Norton, Ripon,; Melissa (Rob) Curran, Ripon; Katie Norton, Madison; Jason Felton, Ft. Collins, CO; Tyler Felton, Menasha; Laura Grotjan, Neenah; Billy Grotjan, Neenah; 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law: Mary Vander Heiden, Blanche Kerrigan and Dorothy Kerrigan.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Edward, Francis, Richard and Leo; sister, Catherine Kortz; son, Roger Vander Heiden; grandson, David Vander Heiden.
Funeral services for Raymond will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, January 26, 2009, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 900 Geiger Street, Neenah, with Rev. Richard Allen officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Wrightstown. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial for Ray has been established at St. Gabriel's Parish.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers at ThedaCare Hospice, especially Katie Kelch, RN, and Dr. Curtis Baltz for the excellent and compassionate care during Ray's last weeks. We also appreciate Father Richard Allen's thoughtful visits in the hospital and home. They helped Ray and the family a great deal.
