    • From Dennis Marler; Below is something you may find interesting. It is a typed copy given to me, and I understand it was originally written by Celcelia Berres, sister to your Leo Berres.
Anna Grosch came to this country from Germany in 1846. She was an orphan, 13 years of age, where she came by boat with her Aunt and other friends. It took them about three months before landing in New York. From there they traveled by water on the Great Lakes and finally reached the Kenosha Harbor. They settled in Brighton Township where they had friends. Anna Grosch lived with relatives and friends during the first years. Later Anna Grosch married Joseph Scholey who came from Germany. He, too, was an orphan. They bought a farm which they worked by hand. In the fall, they had to drive their oxen into Milwaukee with their grain; most of this was exchanged for food for the coming winter. Many times Anna would tell us stories about the Indians coming to their house, and how they found them sleeping on the porch in the morning. They raised a large family on the farm, six boys and three girls. As they were growing up, they decided to move into Kenosha. They built a home at what is now known as 5043 - 14th Ave. Two of Thier children now dead, Peter age 8 died by drowning on the breakwater; another girl, Anna, died at the age of 22. Our mother, Margaret Scholey, who married John Berres, decided to build ahome near her parents. Shortly after their home was finished Margaret Berres's father Joseph Scholey, died at the age of 62, leaving Anna, his wife, with the family that was left at home to raise. Anna Scholey lived may years after her husband's death. In this time she made many friends and was a very loving person. One of her closest friends was a Mrs. Charles Pfenning who was a early settler of Kenosha. Anna not only enjoyed her wonderful friends but she liked gardening of all kinds. In later years our Grandmother lived with our family, the John Berres family. She was then an invalid, living in a wheelchair, having broken her hip in a fall while on her way to Mass at St. George Church. She was at our house for about eight or Nine years; the was transferred to the hospital for about three years, where she died.
On the back was written:John Berres was born in Mouzel, Germany; Districk of Trier, on July 16th 1861. He came to U.S. at age of 18. He died Mar, 19, 1923.He married Margaret Scholey. She was born May 8th, 1869 and died 5/14/49. John's brother Math also came from Germany and married Gertrude Tack and settled in Racine.
