Tombstone in Ogonnelloe"By Michael Kinna Ballybrann In memory of his father John KinnaWho died April 18, 1819 Aged 66 years His mother Anne Kinna Who died Apr il 18, 1819 aged 61 years
His daughter Anne Who died April 13, 1838 aged 38 years
His brother John Who died March 3rd 1838, aged 7 years
And his sister Susan Who died June 7 1844 aged 23 years."The tombstone is in Carrownakilly or the "Hill" Cemetery and is lying fl at and eroded to such an extent that it would be very difficult to read ac curately. I saw it and could not make out any writing. My guide, Jim Varle y, said that he traced the name "Kinna" written in the "the old script." B CK (1993). After scanning the photo and greatly enlarging it, a great de al of writing appeared, still undecipherable, written along the leng th of the stone.(BCK 2/2001).
Let us examine this tombstone script. We have Michael Kinna erecting a tombstone for his father John Kinna (O ld John).Old John died in 1819 at the age of 66 years which gives him a birth ye ar of 1753.
Michael says that Old John was his father. So Michael, supposedly, would have been born about 1776 or shortly after. Then Michael refers to his mother Anne Kinna (Old Anne) who died on the sa me date as Old John aged 61 years
giving her birth year as 1858.
Again Old Anne is more likely Michael's grandmother.Michael refers to his sister Susan who died 1844 aged 23 years and therefo re born 1821.But Michael, supposedly, was born in about 1776 or shortly after.
Michael could not have been born in 1776 or shortly after.Nor could Susan have been Old John's sister comparing their birth years. So Michael would have been born about 1821 and presumably was living wh en the tombstone was erected. Then Michael refers to his brother John (John 2) born 13 March 1838 ag ed 7 years giving a birth year of 1831.
This tends to support Michael's birth about 1821.If Michael was born about 1821 he could not have been Old John's son but w as more likely Old John's Grandson.Michael then refers to 'his' daughter Anne (Anne (2)) who died 13 April 18 38 aged 38 years giving a birth year of
1800She could not have been Old John's daughter for reasons of birth year.If Old john had a son born say 1776 (which year we used in proving Micha el was not Old John's son) then thisson could have produced Anne in 1800. We will call him Father of Michae l. So here the use of the word "his" is
most confusing when referring to Anne the first.

In summary we have John Kinna born 1753.
His wife Anie was born in 1758His son who I have called Father of Michael Kinna born about 1776 who cou ld have been any one of a number ofpersons including Parick Old Ireland Kenna, Thomas Kenna, Lot Kenna and Ed mund Kenna. Then we have Michael Kinna who erected the tombstone and who would have be en born about 1820.
Michael Kinna had a sister Susan born 1821 as established.
Michael had a bother John born 1831 as established.
Hypothesis; In conclusion this hypothesis deals with the possibility of Old John Kin na being the founder of the families ofPatrick Old Ireland Kenna (+Catherine Cox), Thomas McKenna/Michael(+Ann ie St. Laurence), Father ofMichael Kinna(+unknown) or could it have been Mary McKenna?) and also of t he further families of Old John'sgrandchildren, Michael McKenna(+Mary McKenna)(Ballylaghnan), Michael McKen na(+Annie St. Laurence) LotKenna(+Mary Maguire)(Ballylaghnan), Michael McKenna (+Hannagh Vaughan)(O'G onnelloe) and Edmund
Kenna(+Judith or Johanna Mulreedy)(Terang Kennas). As the above is a Hypothesis only, I must state that there is not firm evi dence that John Kinna was an ancestor ofPatrick (Old Ireland) Kenna or of Thomas McKenna. But one feels that th ey are all truly related and the object is
to keep them all together at this stage. BCK Nov. 2005In support of this hypothesis there is the fact that each of the five chil dren of Patrick Old Ireland Kenna whoemigrated to AUS in 1841 gave their names as Kinna/Kenna/Kinnear. Howev er each of the five referred to their
father as Patrick Kinna deceased. This therefore brings into play the fact that Irish names changed during t he course of time according to the
degree of intensity of British oppression.2 The place referred to on the Tombstone , Ballybran, is very close to Bal lyloughnan.3 There is also the element of proximity of burial to suggest kinship. Way ne McKenna confirms (29.12.00) thatthe Tombstone was on the "high or Hill" cemetery where the family see ms to have been buried in close proximity
with one-another.4 I got the same impression in 1993 when viewing the tombstone, it being a lmost in the centre of the otherolder McKennas and also exhibiting that it was very old, almost undecipher able and, strangely, using the name
"Kinna" in the context of all the McKennas.5 "Long Annie" Kenna(+Patrick McKenna) is said (her obit. at Clare Librar y) to have been buried "in the family plot."6 There would have been far fewer families of Kinna/Kenna in this ar ea in 1753.7 There are very few recorded family subjects who use the name "Kinn a" as against Kenna and McKennawhich fact tends support the link between Old John and Patrick Old Irela nd Kenna/Kinna.8 Also to be considered is the strange fact that Old John and his wife An ne died on the same day in 1819. OldJohn was 66 years. His family would have been established but any disastro us event could have been disruptive, resulting in a departure, from O'Gonnelloe, of some of his children. In this context a note of Michael O'Gorman when commenting on the tombsto ne is interesting."God help us, and doesn't it make sad reading the two deaths in 1838 are s ignificant, as they indicate a link withthe Cholera epidemic which raged throughout east Clare that year. I ha ve a short item on that outbreak in myPaper Tigers book on the famine in Scariff Workhouse Union. The amazing th ing is that anyone survived it. Ithink Cholera was the most deadly of all illnesses." (25.04.1999) No dou bt Michael O'Gorman would also beinterested in the fact that Old John and Old Anne both died on the same d ay in 1919. Could another epidemichave killed them? And whilst on this point, Patrick Old Ireland Kenna a nd Kaherine Cox could have died insimilar cause. Their children were born from 1810 to 1826. Yet they were b oth deceased by 1841 when the family
      emigration took place.
