  Two Kaukauna men will again set foot on United States soil after more than two years serving in the Pacific theater of operations. Technical fourth grade William J. Steffens and Pfc. William J. Van Dyke basic training together and left the United States in July of 1943 to join 43rd infantry wing victory division in the Solomon Islands. Both men were awarded the bronze arrowhead for participating in the initial assault waves to storm ashore on Luzon Island. Private Van Dyke wears the Asiatic Pacific ribbon with two battle stars, the Philippine liberation ribbon with one bronze star, the combat imagery badge and good conduct medal.
