- Melvin R. Aul, formerly of Appleton, age 91, went home to be with the Lord for eternity on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, from River Hills West Healthcare Center in Pewaukee. Mel was born October 25, 1916, in the Town of Buchanan, to the late Emil and Frieda (Doering) Aul. He resided in and loved Appleton for 86 years. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1934. Following graduation, he joined the CCC's in Star Lake, WI. On January 18, 1939, Mel was united in marriage to Rosemary A. Reiter. The couple enjoyed 48 years together until her death in 1987. Mel was in business for himself from 1951 to 1987 starting as a cabinet maker for new home construction in the Appleton area. The business evolved into Mel Aul Custom Fixtures and Interiors, a strictly commercial enterprise designing and building supper clubs, restaurants and bars primarily in Wisconsin but also in Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Florida. He was an avid sports fan his entire life. Mel was a low handicap golfer and a member of Ridgeway Country Club. He placed second in the Cherryland Open in Door County in the late 1950s and his wife, Rosie and he won the couples championship at Ridgeway CC in the early 1970s. He was a huge fan and held season tickets for many years to the Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Milwaukee Bucks games. Mel took great pride in his children and was dedicated to their success and well-being.
He is survived by his daughter Jackie (Don) Brown, Waukesha; two sons: Thomas (Pat) Aul, Delafield and William (Nancy) Aul, San Diego, CA. Grandchildren Beth (Eric) Vosburg, Middleton; Jill (Paul) Galazka, Oshkosh; Justin Winslow, Delafield; Charlie (Dava) Aul, Atlanta; Maggie (Ben) Stahl, Dousman; Christopher Aul, Malibu, CA; and Katie and Sally Aul, San Diego. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren: Gavin, Jackie, Jane, Emily, Katherine, Jonathon, Abby, CJ, and Kai; his sister Ellyn Bruch, Appleton; and a sister-in-law Joan Reiter, Oshkosh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rosemary, and two sisters: Vera (Radke) Bauernfiend and Erna Peak.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 10, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton, with the Rev. Dennis Ryan officiating. Friends may visit directly at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund to St. Bernard Catholic Church has been established in Mel's name.
