- Joseph Peter Karls, 85, N2144 Highway 151, Chilton, Wis., passed away at Hospice Home of Hope on Oct. 9, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was born May 26, 1924, in Charlesburg, Wis., a son of Peter and Barbara (Leitner) Karls. On Oct. 2, 1945, he married Leona Kraus at St. Peter's Catholic Church, St. Peter, Wis. They recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.
He spent most of his working career with the Calumet County Highway Department. Earlier in his career, he worked in the cheese industry as a licensed cheesemaker.
He loved his family, had a kind heart, enjoyed socializing and playing cards with family and friends. He also enjoyed traveling, bowling and polka dancing. He was a Parish member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Stockbridge.
Surviving are his wife, Leona; three children, James (Teresa) Karls, Fond du Lac; Mary (Thomas) Stilp, Stockbridge; and Thomas Karls, Chilton; four grandchildren, Brenda (Patrick) Skalecki, Appleton; Mark (Melissa) Karls, Appleton; Brian (Dawn) Hanke, Chilton; and Lisa (Nick) Bretl, Green Bay; four great-grandchildren, Austin Skalecki, Lindsey Skalecki, Braeden Karls and Dominick Bretl. He is further survived by three sisters, Sally Braun, Adeline Sohrweide and Margaret (James) Morgan; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
His parents; brothers, Edmund and Alfred; sisters, Marcella Kraemer, Marie Olszyk and Martina Zolp, preceded him in death.
The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Stockbridge, on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, from 2 to 3:45 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Oct. 14, in St. Mary's Church, Stockbridge, at 4 p.m. The Rev. Philip ding Van Thiep will preside. A private family entombment is planned for Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Chapel of the Risen Christ Mausoleum, Calvary Cemetery, Fond du Lac.
The family thanks Agnesian Healthcare and the Hospice Home of Hope caregiver staff for their compassion and loving care.
A memorial in his name will be established.
