- Robert J. Burns, M.D., Freeport, is one of the younger physicians of the c ity, who has come to the practice of his profession with all of the resour ces that the most modern and scientific training can provide, and faces t he future with confidence of one who knows that he can command the situati on with the ample resources that a sound medical culture has put into h is hands. The Burns family traces its origin back to Ireland, where Jo hn Burns, the grandfather of Dr. Burns, was born. He came to this count ry about 1840, and lived some two years near Rochester N.Y., then coming i nto Illinois, settled on a farm near Rockford, where he passed the last ye ars of his life, and died in 1871 at the age of 73. Tobias Burns, his s on and the father of Robert J. Burns, was born in Ireland, but was broug ht into this country when a mere child, Richard upon the Winnebago Coun ty Farm, and is now living at the age of 67. He was a man of considerab le importance in the early days; had much native ability, and was very we ll educated, so that he was often asked to except official position s. He never accepted any office whatever, preferring rather to devote him self to the management of extensive agricultural interests. He is the proprietor of several farms that aggregate 510 acres and to them he gives a ll of his attention. His wife was Mary Doyle, a native of New York, and t he daughter of Timothy Doyle, who entered this country from Ireland abo ut 1840. Of the 10 children born to Tobias Burns and his wife, five so ns and four daughters are still living. Dr. Burns was born near Rockford, January 30th, 1871, and during his boyhood attended the neighboring district school. When he had derived all the benefits he could from its instruction he entered the Rockford Schools, and in 1889 completed its course of study. He taught school for two years in the adjacent county, and t hen entered upon his medical studies in Rush Medical College of Chicago. He received his diploma in 1896, and had already become quite a physician as he had practiced during his college years under the instruction and supervision of two of Chicago's ablest practitioners. Immediately following his graduation he located in Freeport, and here he has been engag ed in practice to the present time. He is a member of the Catholic Churc h, and has many warm friends and all the churches. He is also a memb er of the Stevenson County Medical Society, and is attending physici an to St. Francis hospital. He takes much interest in fraternal matters, and as a member of several of the leading orders, among which might be mentioned the Modern Woodmen of America, and its allied organization, the Royal Neighbors, the Court of Honor, and the Catholic Order of Fore sters, and is a medical examiner for several life insurance companies, with whom his word as much weight. Among them may be mentioned the Prudential, the Northwestern Mutual Life of Minneapolis, the Mutual Life of New York, the Mutual Life of Chicago, the Modern Woodmen of America, the Cathol ic Order of Foresters, the Court of Honor, the rural neighbors, and the Brotherhood of Railway trainmen. Politically the doctor is a Democrat.

- Vows are exchanged, Miss Mary Agatha Cox and Dr. Robe rt J. Burns united this morning at a nuptial High Mass was celebrated at St. Mary's Church at 9:00 this morning, Dr. Robert Joseph Burns and Miss Mary Agatha Cox were united in marriage, the Reverend Father Croke being the officiating clergyman. The approach of the bridal party was announced as the Ms. Mary Brennan and Jennie Tracy began the bridal chorus of the Lohengren Wedding March. Dr. Burns and his best man, James Burns, of Rockford, a brother, entered the side door and took positions before the alter railing. Little Hillary Cox, a sister of the bride, attired in pure white, led the procession down the aisle to the Alter, accompanied by Miss Margaret Cox, another sister of the bride, and was followed by the bride and her father, who gave her way. During the offertory in the Misses Jennie Tracy and Gertrude Loos rendered an "Ave Maria." The bride presented a pretty picture in a gown of white silk mull, over taffeta, trimmed with Valenciennes medallions and chiffon, caring a shower bouquet of brides roses and wearing an elaborate bride's vail. Miss Margaret Cox was becoming leak attired in tan silk etamine, trimmed in appliqué of the same shade, over turquoise Landsdowne silk. She carried an arm bouquet of pink roses. The ushers were Edward Cox and John P. Glennan. Before beginning the impressive marriage ritual employed by the Roman Catholic church the pastor, Father Croke, took the occasion to speak of the sacredness of the sacrament of matrimony, and in beautiful language referred to the happiness in store for the young people, predicting a bright future for them. At the conclusion of the ceremony the bridal party was driven to the Cox residence, 30 Clark Avenue, where Dr. and Mrs. Burns were the recipients of congratulations from both relatives and invited guests to the number of 50 or more. Elaborate preparations had been made for the reception. White and green with the colors, and the parlors were very handsomely decorated. The bride's table was tastefully trimmed with ribbons, a nd roses and smilax aided in making it attractive. At 11 a wedding breakfast was served, the server's being the Misses Mary Gordon, Florence Donahue, Anna Grant, Jennie Grant and Rose Vail. At 2:05 this afternoon Dr. a nd Mrs. Burns left for Chicago, and from there they will go to St. Paul and other points. After July 15th they will be at home in a new residence at 65 South Galena Ave. The bride of today's wedding has been one of the most popular of her set, and she will have the best wishes of scores of friends. She is a native of Wisconsin, completed the full courses at St. Clare's College at Sinsinawa mound, and for several years has been recognized as one of the most successful teachers in the public schools of Freeport. Since coming here she has taken an active part in the work of St. Mary's Parish, and has served with great credit as prefect of the Young Ladies sodality. A young woman of culture and refinement, possessing traits that are commendable, she is well qualified to preside over a home of her own. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Cox, a lady and gentleman, who stand in the high regard of all who know them. Dr. Burns has resided in Freeport since 1896, and he has not only been successful in a profession he is very much devoted to, but he has created many warm friendships. He is a native of Winnebago County, and is a son of Tobias Burns, who settled there in the early days, and is a heavy land owner. Dr. Burns attended the district in Rockford schools and after teaching two years entered Rush Medical College, in Chicago, where he graduated in 1896, coming immediately to Freeport. He is a prominent member and secretary of the Stevenson County Medical Society, has recently been reappointed County physician, and is the examiner for quite a number of fraternal organizations. Personally, he is a genial companionable man well in formed, with prospects of a successful future. Dr. and Mrs. Burns received a large number of beautiful gifts, and the display was evidence of the steam of the friends at home and at a distance. Among those from abroad were Miss Millie Jaeger of Dubuque; Reverend L.X. DuFour of Chicago, Thomas Cox, Miss Jennie Cox, of Appleton Wisconsin; Mrs. Mary Burns, mother of the groom, Mr. and Mrs. Doran, Mrs. Loretta Doran, Mr. and Mrs. John Burns, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burns, master David Burns, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Burns, Misses Catherine and Mildred Burns and James and Tom Burns all of Rockford.
