- Ray Ohm, 85, went home to his Lord on Friday, March 9, 2007. He died at his home after a seven year courageous battle with cancer. He was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Potter, son of the late Carl and Pauline (Thiel) Ohm, and grew up on a small farm. In May, 1942, he enlisted in the Army. After basic training in Arkansas and Ft. Lewis, Washington, he was assigned to the Quartermasters Division and proudly served his country in North Africa and Italy until Nov. 28, 1945. Upon his honorable discharge, he married Arlene Schomisch, Jan. 5, 1946, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, Kaukauna and they enjoyed 61 wonderful years of marriage together. After their marriage, Ray and Arlene moved to Neenah where they lived their entire lives and both were former employees of Kimberly-Clark, Field Service Division. Ray retired after working 32 years there in 1978. During his retirement, they enjoyed traveling to England, Germany and many other European countries. He also loved camping and spent many winters in Florida and other southern states, plus traveling around the country to other campgrounds during the summers. He also built and ran his own family restaurant in Manitowoc for 20 years and sold it in 1988. Ray was very talented and mechanically able and enjoyed buying and remodeling old houses into rental property; loved restoring old cars, old engines, tractors and other mechanical things, along with doing wood carvings in his spare time, and completed many beautiful items. Ray loved his church and volunteered wherever he was needed to help someone. He also sang in the Faith Tones Gospel Choir and the church choir for 55 years; spent many hours working at the Camp Lucerne campgrounds whenever needed. He also volunteered for work at Habitat for Humanity and anyone who needed help. He was a World War II veteran and belonged to the American Legion Hawley-Dieckhoff post #33, Neenah.
Ray is survived by his beloved wife, Arlene, Neenah; a precious daughter, Nancy and her husband, Bill Haga, Neenah; two grandchildren, Brian (Crystal) Hansen and Eric Hansen, Neenah; three step-grandchildren, Brad, Billy and Brent Haga, all of Neenah; and two great grandchildren, Cameron and Rowan Hansen, Neenah. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Helen Ohm, Wauwatosa; a sister-in-law, Helen Peterson, Arizona; plus many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather to his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Pauline Ohm; a son, Nathan Ohm in 1990; two sisters, Florence (Ross) Root and Esther Ohm; two brothers, Karl (Jerry) and Wilmer Ohm.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2007, at Faith United Methodist Church, Neenah with Rev. Timothy Vanden Langenberg officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of the service. A memorial has been established in Ray's memory. Military rites will be conducted by the William Verhagen American Legion Post #60, Kimberly following the services at the church.
