- Esther H. Ehlke, 93, Readfield, died on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at St. Joseph Residence in New London. She was born on May 4, 1915, in the Town of Caledonia, Wis., the daughter of the late Emil and Anna (Kloehn) Schellin. On June 22, 1937, Esther married Walter "Doc" Ehlke at St. John Lutheran Church in Caledonia. They were blessed with 71 years of marriage. Esther was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Readfield, as well as the Readfield Homemakers Club. She and Doc enjoyed dancing together. They danced on TV together for 25 years as well as many dancehalls around the area, winning many awards. Esther also enjoyed gardening and sewing.
Esther is survived by her husband, Walter "Doc"; a son, Jim (Sharon), New London; a daughter, JoAnne (Jerry) Kuppernus; five grandchildren, Steve (Karen) Ehlke, Lisa (Mike) Zaddack, Todd Kuppernus (special friend, Laurie), Tim Kuppernus, and Troy (Liz) Kuppernus; six great-grandchildren, Candace Kuppernus, Kayla and Dylan Ehlke, Lauren Zaddack, Konnor Kuppernus, Tyler Kuppernus; a sister-in-law, Adeline Schimke, Crivitz; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A special Thank You is extended to Esther's nieces, Gladys, Marlene, Caroline and Adeline.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry (Alma) Schellin, Walter (Clara) Schellin; a brother-in-law, Raymond Schimke; a sister-in-law, Caroline (David) Meshke.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, N985 Cty Rd. W, Readfield. The Rev. Robert Diener will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Readfield. Friends may call on Sunday at the Lewin Funeral Home in Fremont from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
A memorial fund has been established for Zion Lutheran Church, Readfield.
