- Dale Carlson, age 84, of Appleton, passed away on May 3, 2011, at Cherry Meadows after an extended illness. He was born July 2, 1926, to the late Gustave A. and Myrtle (Piper) Carlson in Unity, WI, where he was raised on the family farm. Dale graduated from Unity High School in 1944. Following his service in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1945-46, he attended Whitewater State Teachers College where he earned his Business Education degree. While teaching business classes at Waterford High School in Waterford, WI, he met and later married Carol Ranke on December 20, 1952. Dale became a State Farm Insurance agent in Waterford and was transferred to Eau Claire, WI in 1957 as a district manager. In 1960 he moved to Appleton to become a sales representative for Wausau Insurance Company, retiring in 1989. He was an active member of St. James United Methodist Church. In addition to serving his church, he enjoyed helping family members with farm work, gardening, woodworking, traveling with friends, and visiting family members.
Dale is survived by his wife, Carol, along with daughters: Nancy (Bob) Norton, Jackson, WY; Kathy (Monty) Villere, Monument, CO; and Cindy (Dave) Hawley, Appleton. He is also survived by grandchildren: Alex and Kary Norton, Justin and Aaron Villere and Nick and Brian Hawley. Other survivors include his brother, Wally (Ann) Carlson; three sisters-in-law: Esther Carlson, Lois Schindler, and Joyce Ranke; step-brother-in-law Edwin Krueger; many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Marvin and Clifford; brother-in-law, Gene Ranke; and step- brother-in-law, Leslie Krueger.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at ST. JAMES UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 100 W. Capitol Drive, Appleton, with Rev. Mark Klaisner officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of services. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton.
The family wishes to thank Walt and Ann, Bonnie, Eleanor, Dale's ThedaCare Hospice home-care team and volunteers, and the staff at Cherry Meadows for their compassionate care during the last month's of Dale's illness. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Dale's name to benefit St. James United Methodist Church and ThedaCare Hospice.
