- Janet C. Van Handel, of Kaukauna, passed away on August 7, 2008. She was born on December 7, 1921, in Kaukauna, the fifth of eight children born to Peter and Petronella (Nellie) Kieffer. Janet married John B. Peters on May 16, 1946. They farmed in the Town of Vanden Broek until 1961 and then in the Town of Oneida until John's death on October 28, 1977. They raised six children. On September 13, 1985, Janet married Mathias A. (Matt) Van Handel and they made their home in Kaukauna. Matt passed away on December 16, 1999.
Mom enjoyed cooking, music, dancing, shopping for bargains, and playing cards. She was a waitress at the Swan Club in De Pere for many years and volunteered at St. Paul's Nursing Home in Kaukauna. Mom was faithful to the Catholic Church and even though other memories failed her in her later years she could flawlessly recite her prayers.
Janet is survived by five of her children and their families: Sharon (Phil) Keener (children Renee (Kris) Tobias, Aaron, and Jason (Laura), Diane (Reginald) Lawrence (children Scott (Jill), Michael (Jenny), and Jeffrey (fiancee Angela), Ken (Darlene) Peters (children Kevin and Kurt Peters, Adam (Stephanie) Rickert, Luke (Becca) Rickert, and Diane, Laurie, and Lee Rickert), Shirley (Donald) Conrad (children Tom (Tracey) and John (Deann), and Darlene (Jeff) Vanden Boogart. She is also survived by great grand children: Kendra and Kyla Tobias, Alexis Keener, Zoe Lawrence, Mariah Rickert, Ethan Conrad, Tayah and Addison Conrad, and Peyton, Aryanah, and Austin Rosin.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna (Ron) Rosin (children Brian and Becky Rosin).
Janet is further survived by Matt's children and their families: Margaret (Michael) Bartelt, Paul Van Handel, Jean (Robert) Hruska (children Kelly, Linnea, and David), Joyce (Robert) Luckow (children Daniel (Karen), Stephanie (Juan) Gonzales, Angela, and Pamela), Fred (Marilyn) Van Handel (children Amelia and Rebecca), and Luke (Ellen) Van Handel. She is also survived by a great grand child Andrew Luckow. Janet's sister, Audrey (Wilbert "Bud") Albers, survives in addition to sisters-in-law: Ruth, Mary, and Eva Kieffer.
She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters Orville (Lorraine), Elmer, Carl (Georgiana), Earl, Gordon (Magdalen), and Betty (Ben) Verbeten.
The funeral will be on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in the Town of Oneida.
