  Bishop Paul Peter Rhode, 73, head of the Green Bay Catholic Diocese since 1915, died this morning in Mercy Hospital, Oshkosh, after a lingering illness. His condition had been serious during the last several days. He had gone to the hospital several months ago for rest and treatment. The sixth bishop to serve the Green Bay diocese, Bishop Rhode was immediately succeeded by Bishop Stanislaus V. Bona, appointed by Pope Pius XII on Dec 2, 1944, as coadjutor bishop. During his 29 ½-year tenure as head of the 16-county diocese, Bishop Rhode drew the esteem and respect of members of all denominations. He, in turn, frequently spoke his love and affection for residents of the area he served and last June called the Fox River valley the "garden spot of America," describing the people as loyal, God-fearing and law abiding.
