- HERMSEN, Jerome M. Jerome M. Hermsen, 73, beloved husband of LaVerne (Hietpas) Hermsen, of West Hartford, died Saturday (October 11, 2008). Born in Little Chute, WI, the son of the late Henry and Susan (Verkuilen) Hermsen, he made his home in West Hartford the past 40 years. Jerry graduated from St. John's University in Collegeville, MN Class of 1957 and served in the U.S. Army as a 1st lt. He worked for The Hartford Group as an Underwriter in their Property and Casualty Dept retiring in 2001 after 43 years of employment, and was Associate Professor at The University of Connecticut Insurance School. Jerry received many professional certifications including CPCU, Risk Management and CIC. He was a member of the Insurance Institute of America, was an active member and Eucharistic Minister at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, was active on numerous school boards throughout West Hartford, was chairman of the 2nd district of the Republican Committee, and was a proud member of Toastmasters. Besides his wife of 49 years, he is survived by his six children and their spouses, Michael and Julie Hermsen of Glastonbury, Mark and Kelli Hermsen of Simsbury, Karen and Robert Houvener of Hollis, NH, Matthew and Michele Hermsen of Fairfield, Jerome Hermsen, Jr. and his wife Jacqueline Odell Hermsen of Gloucester, MA, Elizabeth Hermsen and her husband Daniel Deitz of Alexandria, VA; two sisters and a brother, Rachel Webers and her husband James of Grosse Pointe, MI, Jude Hermsen and his wife Shirley of LaPorte, IN, Gretchen Kamps and her husband Richard of Marshfield, WI; 12 grandchildren, Alexander, Rachel, James, Jeffrey, Dillon, Cole, Lauren, Allison, Joshua, Mia, Victoria, Ryan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Rev. Ralph Hermsen. The funeral will be Wednesday, at 9:30 a.m. from the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 872 Farmington Ave., West Hartford.
