- Lucille Agnes Schuh, 102, Kunesh, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, surrounded by her family.
Lucille was born in Gourley Michigan on February 2, 1913, to the late Frank and Zoe (Radart) Vanden Plas. She spent some of her childhood in Gourley and also in Green Bay. In 1920, the family moved to Sidnaw, MI, where her father owned a lumber mill. Lucille spent her days helping her family with the mill, gardening, babysitting her younger siblings and taking care of the animals. She loved school and the friendships made there. She went to high school in Sidnaw until the school was consolidated. She graduated from Kenton High School and attended Vocational school in Green Bay. Lucille enjoyed her secretarial classes, became proficient at shorthand, and worked as a secretary.
Lucille married Clement M. Schuh on October 2, 1934, at St. Patrick Church in Green Bay. They were married for 64 years. The couple farmed in the town of Pittsfield for 61 years. Lucille remained on the farm until 2010, at which time she moved to Cardinal Ridge Assisted Living in Howard. Lucille was known for her love of God, family and gardening. She credited her many strawberry beds and raspberries for her longevity. Lucille was an organic gardener long before it was popular. Her greenhouse was a source of joy her last years on the farm, where there was always something sprouting. Lucille loved sharing the produce of her garden and orchard with family and friends. A tasty melon or flowers always had the seeds saved for the next season's planting. She was an excellent author, baker, and seamstress. She and Clem enjoyed playing cards with neighbors and family all their lives. Lucille enjoyed reading and especially the book fairs, from which she would bring home bags of books. In 2004, she published a book titled Through The Years with stories and history of the Schuh and Vanden Plas families. It contained memories of her childhood and courtship and continued to modern days on the family farm in Kunesh. Nurturing and encouraging her family and friends was a lifelong gift. Her gentle, wise counsel was sought by many generations of family members.
Lucille was a hard working woman who gave her all to everything. She was a wonderful role model to her family. She was a member of SS Edward & Isidore Parish, where she belonged to the Altar Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Anston Social Club.
She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law: Frank and Rose Schuh, Kunesh, David and Margaret Schuh, Isaar, Martin and Joann Schuh, Burke, VA, Roger and Elise Schuh, Anston; six daughters and sons-in-law: Lucille and William Strojny, Green Bay, Mary and James DeFrance, DePere, JoAnne and James Reimer, Flintville, Linda and James Krouse, Green Bay, Bonnie and Earl Spencer, Flintville, Joyce and Allan Kabara, Kunesh; 43 grandchildren; 93 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Millie Schuh, Appleton, many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; a granddaughter, Laura Schuh; a daughter-in-law, Janet Schuh; two brothers and their spouses, Lawrence and Bernice Vanden Plas, Francis and Myrle Vanden Plas; four sisters and their spouses: Florence and Walter Nooyen, Alice and Elgin Butcher, Rita and Lawrence Yusvak, and Loretta and Harry Warden; brothers and sisters-in-law and their spouses: Ignatius and Martha Schuh, Raymond and Bertha Schuh, Servanus and Helen Schuh, Gustave and Agnes Schuh, Clara and Casper Schauer, Peter and Lucille Schuh, Anna and Henry Vosters, Reverend Earl Schuh, Calixta and Andrew Vosters.
Friends may call at SS. Edward & Isidore Church, 3667 Flintville Road (Green Bay), Flintville, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, with closing prayers at 5:00 p.m. Visitation continues after 9:00-11:00 a.m. Monday. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church, Fr. David Hoffman presiding. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established in her name.
