- Orville R. "Mayor" Gonnering, Freedom, age 73, died suddenly on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at home. He was born August 20, 1934, to the late John and Catherine (Verstagen) Gonnering in Freedom. On October 3, 1968, he married the former Sharon Joel at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Freedom. Orville was a member of St. Nicholas Parish and the Freedom Lions Club and worked for many years as a livestock dealer. He enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as time spent with his dog, Sweetie. Family life was very important to Orville, he had great interest in his children and grandchildren and the many activities they enjoyed. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Gonnering, his two sons, Terry (fiancee, Tammy Erdmann) Filen and his daughter, Jennifer and John (Melanie) Gonnering and their son, Jack; his daughter, Sharon "Peachy" (Dave) Lillge and their two children, Jake & Emily. He is further survived by three brothers, William Gonnering, Eugene (Mary) Gonnering and Donald (Lois) Gonnering; three sisters, Lorraine Vandenberg, Rosie Stoffel, and Patricia (Jerry) Kittiko, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Jack, a sister Adele, a sister in law, Dorothy Gonnering and two brothers in law, Mike Vandenberg and Don "Butch" Stoffel.
Orville's Memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. on Friday, October 5, 2007 at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Freedom, with Fr. David Hoffman officiating. Friends will be received on Friday at Church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
