Triple wedding - Esler Marriage News |
- Brides Come in Threes - by Mrs. Orville C Griese
On June 7th in the year 1904, there occurred in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, a phenomenon never again to be equaled - the marriage of two sisters and a brother, children of Frances and Peter Esler. The event caused a great stir; the city band accompanied the wedding party of twenty-two, to the scene of the wedding at Holy Cross Church.
This photograph shows the three brides and grooms as follows:
The lady to the far left is my mother, former Mary Esler; beside her is the groom, my father, Joseph Derus. The middle bride-to-be is Margaret Hendricks, about to exchange vows with John Esler. The last woman is Katherine Esler, to wed Otto Kilgas. The brides' dresses were hand sewn and quite ornate with lace; ruffles and flowers.
My parents had seven children, as did the John Eslers. The Kilgas duo produced ten children. Through the years, procreation has numbered cousins in the hundreds, as can be witnessed at family reunions.
Only two persons from the original wedding party are now living - one bride, now Margaret Esler, and one attendant, Mike Gerhartz. Descendants still abound in the Kaukauna area and surrounding Fox River Valley.
In the Peter Esler family, there also were two daughters who married two brothers. One was Grace, married to Frank Femal, and Gertrude, married to Ernie Femal.
Not many years later, one of the three who had the triple wedding died, along with my grand-father, Peter, so there was a double funeral. This was the husband of Katherine - Otto Kilgas.
Peter Esler had a son Peter from a first marriage who was raised by his second wife Frances, along with three more sons - John, Henry, and Sylvester. The other daughters were Lena, Emma, and Anne. Anne is now Mrs. Bert Roberts, and lives in Kaukauna. She is in good health and is wonderful to visit with, as she remembers so many interesting stories from the past; it's a real pleasure to talk with her. Also living nearby is the youngest son, Sylvester Esler and his family.
