- Daniel J. Ryan was Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Buchanan Township. He has been actively identified with the agricultural interes ts of Outagamie County for the past 15 years. He is the son of Daniel and Winifred (Powers) Ryan, natives of Limeri ck and Clare, Ireland. They were married in Chicopee, Massachusetts on Ap ril 6, 1856 and came to Wisconsin about 1858. Daniel J. Ryan was the third of a family of eight children and he rem ained at hime with his parents until he was 22 years of age. At that ti me he went to the Territory of Washington (now State of Washington) whe re for one year he worked for wages. He then went to California, with a s heep shearing crew. For the next twelve years he was engaged in raising w heat, rye, and barley on 2,500 acres of rented land in LaGrange, Californi a. While in California he came in contact with his father's brothers, Ti mothy Ryan and Michael Ryan in the Tuolumne County area. He also ca me in contact with his fathers sister, Bridgit. Bridgit was marri ed to a Patrick McNamara who lived in Knights Ferry. In 1897 he returned to Outagamie County, and since that time has resi ded on the old homestead in Buchanan Township. A part of this he inherit ed and a part he purchased. He engages in general farming, markets dai ry products, hogs, cattle, and some poultry. He raises hay and grain f or feed. He milks on an average of 11 cows, and at present has a fine we ll fed herd. He is also breeding 2 Belgian horses. He is at present remo deling his house and barn, and has 80 acres under the plow. His proper ty is fenced with barbed and woven wire. In political matters he is a Democrat, but in local matters is inclin ed to vote independent. He is at present Chairman of the Board of Supervi sors of Buchanan Township and has been a member of the School Board f or 9 years. He and his family are members of the Holy Angels Catholic Chu rch in Darboy. In 1884 he left Wisconsin, traveling across the northe rn part of the United States and arrived in the Washington Territory (n ow the State of Washington). He stayed for about one year and in 1885 ca me to California. He settled on some land in LaGrange, California. He w as married to Catherine Gleeson on October 10, 1887 in Oakdale, Californi a. His neighbor in LaGrange was Patrick Gleeson and his wife, Agne s. He was Catherine (Gleeson) Ryan's brother. In 1897 he and Catherine a nd the family returned to Kaukauna, Wisconsin as they were victims of a dr aught and failure of crops. Catherine Gleeson came to the United Stat es at the age of 15 years.
In the book "The Streets of Kaukauna" it mentions Ryan St as named after D aniel J Ryan the 1st president of the village of Combined Locks and a supe rvisor to the Outagamie County Board.

Mr Ryan was born Feb 12, 1862 in Outagamie Coun ty and is the son of Daniel and Winifred (Powers) Ryan, natives of Irela nd who were married in Massachusetts and came to Wisconsin about 1858. Th ey first settled on eighty acres of land, a part of which is includ ed in Mr Ryan's present property, at that time a wild tract of timber lan d, and Daniel Ryan began to clear this land, building a one story log hous e, 12x16 feet with two half windows and one door, the timber which he hew ed himself. A few months later he purchased a team of oxen for which he bu ilt a small log stable, and shortly afterwards bought a cow, gradually add ing to his stock of farm implements as he could afford them. About 186 4, Mr Ryan built the house in which Daniel J Ryan is now living, the fir st frame house in the township of Buchanan, and about the same time erect ed a frame barm, 32x50 feet, shingled with split shingles, some of which s till remain in a good state of preservation.The lumber for these buildin gs was ripped by a small sawmill about two miles east of the Ryan homestea d. In 1893 Daniel Ryan built a frame house on a piece of land adjoining t he home farm, and there he lived his remaining yeras, passing away in F eb 1906, while his wife died Oct 16, 1903. Both are buried at St. Mary's C emetery in So. Kaukauna. Although Daniel Ryan was very well known and an i nfluential man in his community he devoted all his time to farming interes ts and never aspired for public preferment. Daniel J. They have 6 childre n: daniel T, a telegraph operator in San Francisco; Catherine I who gradua ted from the Kaukauna High School in 1907 since which time she has been en gaged in school teaching; William D. a graduate of the Kaukauna High Scho ol class of 1909, now assisting his father on the home farm; Winnifred M w ho graduated from the same instituton in 1910 and is now living at home; E dward J, a student in the schools and Mary E who is now two years old.

- 1913 The Kaukauna Sun dated January 16th 1913 Surprised D.J. - Two large s leigh loads of merrymakers from Maple Grove, Kaukauna and vicinity surpris ed D. J. Ryan and family at their home in Buchanan on Tuesday evening Janu ary 14th. Card playing and dancing was the pastime of the evening. Excel lent music was furnished by members of the party. A recess was taken at m idnight to allow all to partake of a bountiful spread after which danci ng continued until the wee hours of morn when all returned to their hom es with joyful thoughts of happy hours spent that evening. - 1918 See story (written in 1948?) about "County Carpenter" about Anton Welhouse who built "The largest barn in the county" for Daniel Ryan in 1918. "Anton Welhouse w as best known for the barns he built, 88 of them, according to his record s. The largest one was constructed in 1918 in the town of Buchanan for D an Ryan who wanted "the biggest barn in the County." It measures 46 by 1 20 ft., reaches 50 ft. to the peak, and is now owned by the Robert Berghu is family. It was built at a cost of $420 for labor, netting him a prof it of $66.91. In 1897 he and Catherine and the family returned to Kaukauna, Wisconsin as they were victims of a draught and failure of crops. Patrick Gleeson and Agnes Corrigan stood up at his wedding. Daniel and Catherine were married at St. Stanislaus Church by Rev. P. McGuire on 10 October 1887.
