- On January 29, 1927, Bernice Frances Mancl was born to Frances and August Mancl in Milladore, Wisconsin. She was the sixth child of eight. There were two boys and six girls. She first attend school at an Elementary School in Milladore, and after their family moved to Black Creek, she attended Black Creek Elementary School. They once again moved to the Appleton area, where she attended St. Joe's Grade School. She graduated from Appleton West High School. While living in Milladore, their family owned and operated Mancl's General Store. After they moved to Black creek, they had a huge garden where they grew beans. At harvest time, they handpicked the beans and sold them to the Seymour Canning Co. for about 2 cents a pound.
While she was growing up, she enjoyed singing and took clarinet lessons. She played the clarinet in the Appleton West High School Band. After graduating from high school, she took a job at the State Tax Office in Appleton. She then took on a new job working for the Wisconsin Wire Works.
She met Roman Janssen at the Wisconsin Wire Works. They were married on July 9, 1949. Together they raised twelve children, seven boys and five girls. They lived on Northland Avenue and after all these years, the house is still standing. It's located right across from Jack's Pizza. They moved to their current home back in 1983. In July of 1999, Bernice and Roman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In 2006, her husband passed away. She enjoys baking the most, especially her famous chocolate chip cookies. That is almost everyone's favorite cookie. Some of her past and current hobbies include cooking, reading, gardening, hiking, going for Sunday drives (especially in the fall of the year). She attends morning mass at St. John's every day except Saturday, and is still active with the St. John Missions. Christopher VanAsten, 2010
