Darlene C. Backus, age 76, of Kaukauna, died on Monday, July 14, 2008, at Colony Oaks Care Center, surrounded by family and friends. Darlene was born on August 11, 1931. Her parents Vince and Nell (Bies) Vandenberg preceded her in death. Darlene married James Backus on August 12, 1968, in Appleton, and he survives her. She enjoyed working at Gimbles, Pranges' and Kohls. Darlene loved traveling, and enjoyed hot fudge sundaes with her grandchildren. She belonged to the T.O.P.S. club for many years. Her favorite pastimes were bird watching, shopping and bowling. She also loved cats and dogs.
In addition to her husband, Darlene is survived by her children: LaVonne (Pat) Frank, Winneconne; Rick (special friend Sheldon Shur), Milwaukee; David (Cindy) Neenah; Carol (Steve) Bowden, Appleton; Ann (Rick) Gehl, Stockbridge; and Scott (Julie), of Kaukauna. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and a step- sister, Sally Van Beek.
The Mass of Resurrection for Darlene will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 18, 2008, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer St., Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Fargo Funeral Home, and also at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. A memorial is being established.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the Dialysis Center of Appleton (Fresenius), Colony Oaks Care Center, Theda Care Hospice, and special friends, Bonnie and Sandy.
