- Peter John Stevens, age 59, passed away July 6th, 2016 while visiting in the Dominican Republic. Peter was born June 6th, 1957 in Appleton, WI to John R. Stevens and Shirley May (Ziegler) Stevens. He attended Appleton Schools graduating from Appleton West High School in 1975. While attending Appleton West High School, Peter enjoyed sports and broke records in pole vaulting. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Post service, he attended UW Whitewater, graduating from UW Platteville, with honors, with a BA in Education. He taught at several schools in the Spring Green, WI area. He also pursued graduate studies in Educational Media & Technology at the University of Indiana, Fort Wayne.
Peter's many accomplishments as an educator, included an invitation to teach a special math class at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Peter was a consummate historian, with a focus on English and European history. He enjoyed long history discussions with his family and friends. He loved hunting, gardening, and playing Sheepshead with his wife and mother and his mother's lady friends. Peter also participated in mission work for his church in Panama.
Peter loved veterans, all veterans and was dedicated to their well-being. He willingly joined senior medical staff at the Milwaukee VA Hospital, teaching medical students about veteran care and managing PTSD.
Peter and his wife Valentina Pavlov Stevens moved to the Dominican Republic where Peter taught for two years at the Garden Kids School. During his term with the school he worked tirelessly to obtain international accreditation for the school. He loved teaching and working with his many students.
Peter and his wife moved back to the US due to illness. Over the next five years, he fought a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Peter is survived by his wife, Valentina Pavlov Stevens, his mother Shirley Stevens, his mother-in-law Dragica (Pavic) Pavlov, (Germany) his daughter Katie. He is also survived by his sisters Susan Moses of (TX), Mary Newman (Sun Prairie), a brother William and sister-in-law Mickie Stevens, (OR), his sister-in-law Laurie Stevens, brother-in-law Dean Pavlov (Germany), Shirley's grandson Michael, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father John R Stevens, his brother Mark Stevens.
The funeral will be held at Faith Lutheran Church 601 East Glendale Avenue, Appleton, WI 54911 on Saturday, July 16th, 2016. Visitation from 9am to 11am at the church with a service to follow. Full military honors will follow the service at the church. Interment will be at 2 pm in Highland Memorial Park Appleton.
His wife Valentina wishes to thank God and wants the world to know how blessed she is that this wonderful, loving, brilliant man came into her life. She will love him forever.
