- David George Spiering, 84, a resident of the Forest Grove community died, Monday morning, November 8, 2010 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, OR.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 12, 2010, at the St. Anthony's Catholic Church; 1660 Elm Street in Forest Grove.
Family and friends are invited to attend a reception following the Mass to be held at the Parish Hall. `
A private family committal service will be held following the reception at Mountainview Memorial Gardens in Forest Grove.
David was born on August 15, 1926 in Roy, OR he was one of seven children born to George and Mary (Vanderzanden) Spiering. He was raised on the family farm off of Greenville Rd in Roy and attended St Francis Catholic Grade School in Roy. He later attended Banks High School and Graduated with the Class of 1944.
David immediately enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served his country in the Pacific Theater, during WWII, as a gunner on an Avenger aircraft. He was honorably discharged in 1946 as an Able Seaman 1st Class
He met his future wife through mutual friends and after a year long courtship; they married on April 17, 1948 in Forest Grove, OR. Throughout their marriage they made their home within a square block of their first home moving into their present home in 1993.
David had worked for Stimson Lumber Company for 21 years, in 1968 he moved on to working for NW Natural Gas. He worked for NW Natural Gas until 1989 when he retired as a supervisor.
David was active at his church, St Anthony's Catholic Church, serving on different councils and planning committees, he was also very active in the Knight of Columbus, Adoration Society, Holy Name Society and the Isaac Walton League. He loved spending time with his family he was an avid sports fan and coached little league and umpired baseball for several years. David loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He also had a private pilot's license and enjoyed flying locally. After retiring he and his wife enjoyed traveling in their motor home.
He is preceded in death by his parents and four siblings; Richard, Jimmy, Herb and Donald Spiering and a great grandson; Colton VanBlarcom
Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Beulah, five children and their spouses; Leah and Gregg McDonald of Aloha, OR, Fauna and Glenn VanBlarcom of Forest Grove, OR, Dan and Darcy Spiering of Lake Oswego, OR, Judy Brumfield of Oregon City OR, Jill and Bill Krueger of Gig Harbor, WA, 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, a sister Evelyn LaBella of Portland OR, and a brother Norman Spiering who passed away the same day as David, several hours later.
The family suggests donation in David's name to; Oregon Chapter National Multiple Sclerosis Society. 104 S/W Clay St. Portland Or. 97201 or St. Vincent DePaul.
