- Vander Velden, Virgil M.Virgil M. Vander Velden, 89, Howard, passed away peacefully at a local nur sing home on Wednesday, March 2, 2005. Virgil was born on Feb. 22, 191 6, to the late Antone and Catherine (Hermsen) Vander Velden in Little Chut e. In 1940, he married the former Eva Hansen in Isaar, Wis. Together th ey celebrated 65 years of marriage. During World War II, he served with t he U.S. Army in Germany. For 39 years he was employed by Armour Packing.Virgil is survived by his wife, Eva, Howard; one son, Robert (Bev) Vand er Velden, Green Bay; three daughters, Ellen (Tim) Murphy, Milwaukee; Ja ne (Dick) Korpela, Schofield; Lois (Marcus) Nichols, Lakeside, Mont.; fo ur grandsons, one great-grandson, and one step-great-grandson. He is furth er survived by two brothers, Elmer (Lorraine) and Gerald (Jean) Vander Vel den; three sisters, Verona McNamara, Mary (John) Kosinski, Gladys (Bud) Am brosius; six sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry and Wilm er Vander Velden; and one grandson, Matthew Korpela.The family will receive friends at the Pfotenhauer Funeral Home, Howard-Su amico location, 1145 Cardinal Lane, on Wednesday, March 9, from 4 unt il 8 p.m. and after 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the cortege leaves for churc h. Mass of Christian Burial 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Ch urch, Howard, with the Rev. William Swichtenberg officiating. Burial in F t. Howard Memorial Park.A memorial fund has been established in Virgil's name at the funeral home.The family would like to thank the staff at Grancare Nursing Center for t he care they provided.
