- Mary T. Hermes, age 83, died peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Thursday, October 27, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer and heart disease. Mary was born in Kaukauna on March 6, 1928 to the late Henry and Cecilia (Schampers) Bowers. On May 8, 1947, she was united in marriage to Joseph L. Hermes. The couple enjoyed 49 years together until his death in 1996. Mary worked as a butcher at local grocery stores for many years. Mary and her husband Joe built all the homes that they raised their family in, including their cabins up north. She was an avid hunter, had a passion for crafts and cards, loved wintering at their home in Florida, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of the Red Hatters Club in Florida, the Ladies Auxillary at the VFW, and St. Pius X Catholic Church where she belonged to the Christian Mothers.
She is survived by 2 daughters: Judy (Bill) Williams, Fresno, CA and Sandra "Sam" Strahm, Appleton; daughter-in-law, Elaine; 7 grandchildren: Brandon Hermes, Josh (Jenny) Strahm, Kristy (Steve) Walker, Amy (James) Cheney, Erin Williams, Andrea (Tim) McCue, and Justin (Lynn) Williams; 6 great grandchildren: Gianna Strahm, Cody, Natalie, and Kylie Cheney, Jon Walker, and Brittney Walker; 2 brothers: Bud (Eleanor) Bowers and Clarence (Nancy) Bowers; 2 sisters: Arlene Blair and Rosanne (Bob) Bastian; 2 sisters-in-law: Ann Bowers and Mary Jane Bowers; She is further survived by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 sons: Daniel and Ron Hermes, 3 brothers: Larry, Norman, and Lloyd Bowers, 2 sisters: Millie Lamers and Loraine Shilcox, a son-in-law Daniel Strahm, and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday, October 29, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 W. Marquette St., Appleton, with Father Thomas Farrell officiating. Friends may visit directly at the church on Saturday from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the care givers, especially those who made it possible to fulfill mom's wish to pass at home.
