- As a result of the elections of the beginning of this month Mayor Joseph McCarty stated his intentions while in office. Mayor McCarty informed the audience gathered at last night's council meeting that he anticipated giving the people a clean administration, and that city business would be managed in the interest of Democrats and Republicans alike, and that taxpayers' interest would be carefully guarded. He then settled down making his appointments selecting 20 Democrats for 20 positions, thus administrating affairs in a nonpartisan way. Nine of the Democrats are not even taxpayers of this city.

- Joseph McCarty Dies - Another Prominent Kaukauna Citizen Departs this life.Joseph J. McCarty, Treasurer of Outagamie County, and one of the promine nt citizens in the civic, business and social life of the city of Kaukaun a, departed this life shortly before 12 o'clock Thursday night, January 1 6, death resulting from a relapse following a recent attack of pneumoni a. His death was not wholly unexpected for he had been very low for sever al days, but his relatives and friends had hoped for the best and the pray er of the community was that he might be spared. The news of his demise sp read rapidly this morning and carried with it the deepest regret and sorr ow to all classes
for he was a man popular with all.Joseph McCarty was born February 12, 1864 and therefore would have be en 44 years of age next month. He first saw the light of day on the old Mc Carty homestead in the town of Kaukauna, being the first born on the far m, whither his parents had moved from Green Bay, and where he spent his bo yhood days. February 15, 1887, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Pfe ffer of Freedom, who proved a faithful life's companion. Vicar Gener al P. J. Lochman of the Green Bay diocese, then stationed at the Sagole ch urch, performed the wedding ceremony. Shortly after his marriage he to ok up his residence in the city, which was then enjoying a rapid and healt hy growth, and has since beenidentified prominently in its business life. Although he received but a co mmon school education in his younger days, he was naturally gifted with th at push and ability which makes a good and successful citizen. By di nt of industry and close personal application to business he had prosper ed until today he was numbered among not only the substantial business m en of the city but of the county as well. "Joe" as he was familiarly know n, was popular with all classes, the poor and the well-to-do alike. The re was no fuss and feathers nonsense in his makeup. He was a man in eve ry sense of the work and his loss is one of the kind that is immeasurabl e. It seems incredible that no more shall we see him go up and down our st reets in social comminglings with our citizens, that he must remain wi th us but a memory.The deceased was numbered among that class of citizens who are willing a nd always ready to put their shoulder to the wheel and push along any move ment for the welfare of the community. He was not only identified with t he business life of the city, but for a number of years was closely in tou ch with its political and administrative life. he had been honored with va rious positions of trust, having served a mayor for two terms in 1896 to 1 898, and previous thereto had been alderman for several years. in his earl ier years of manhood Joe had been of Democratic faith, but like thousan ds of other good citizens enlisted under the banner of McKinley for sou nd money and prosperity and had since been an ardent Republican. During t he campaign of 1906 when the Republican party was casting about for a stro ng candidate to place upon the county ticket for the office of treasure r, he was almost unanimously accepted as the right man in the right plac e, made the runs, was honored with the election, and at the time of his de ath was serving as one of the county officials at the court house.Joseph McCarty is survived by his wife and seven children, three sons a nd four daughters, namely: Maggie; Joseph; Alice M.; Margaret G. ; Cha rlotte M. Charles S. and Robert T. . Also his aged father, De nnis McCarty, upon whom the blow falls heavily and it is thought serious ly as he is at present confined to his bed with injuries received Saturd ay afternoon, referred to elsewhere, also six sisters and three brother s: Mrs. Barney Corcoran, Kaukauna; Florence J. McCarty, St. Paul; Mr s. A. A. Baldwin, Georgiania, Florida; Mrs. Louis Glenn, Northport, Washin gton; Thomas McCarty, Ogden, Utah; Mrs. John Flanagan, Tomahawk, WI; Miss es Kate and Mayme and Richard McCarty of this city.Deceased was a member of various fraternal societies, the principal ones b eing the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Foresters and the B.P.O. elks, a ll of whom will turn out in a body to attend the last sad rites. He carri ed insurance with the two-first named organizations, besides additional in surance, thus providing well for his beloved family.The cause of his death was continued attacks of pneumonia. In 1898 he w as confined to his bed for a number of months with the disease and narrow ly escaped death at that time. As a result of this first attack his lun gs were seriously impaired and upon recovery sufficiently to make the tr ip he went south and spent several months with his brother in Florida. H is lungs never regained normal condition, however, and he had since been s lightly, bothered with asthma. Shortly before Christmas he was again attac ked with pneumonia, fought is off and rallied so that he was able to be o ut and attend tobusiness, but again taking cold a relapse followed with fatal result.At the time of going to press this noon, Friday, arrangements for the fune ral had not definitely been made, but it was thought it would be held Mond ay morning from Holy Cross Church.

- JOSEPH J. McCARTY, deceased. In the death of Joseph J. McCarty, the city of Kaukauna, Wisconsin, lost an able and progressive business man, and one who was closely identified with civic affairs during a long period. He was born February 10, 1865, and as a young man learned the trade of blacksmith, for some years having a shop of his own on Lawe street, in addition to working for the Northwestern Railroad. .He closed his shop to become manager of the Kaukauna Electric Light plant, was later the owner of an ice business which he purchased from Luther Lindauer then engaged in traveling for a scraper company, and at the time of his death was engaged in the cement contracting business. His death occurred January 17, 1908. For some years Mr. McCarty served Kaukauna as a councilman, in 1896 was elected mayor of the city, and in 1908 was elected to the office of county treasurer of Outagamie county. Mr. McCarty was married February 15, 1887, to Annie Pfiffer, of Freedom, Wisconsin, daughter of Matthew and Gertrude (Kramer) Pfiffer, natives of Germany who came to Wisconsin about 1845 and were married here. Mr. Pfiffer was a farmer and veterinary surgeon. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McCarty, namely: Joseph; Alice; Margaret, a nurse at Trinity Hospital, Milwaukee; and Lottie, Ray, Stanley and Robert, residing at home. Mr. McCarty was connected with Holy Cross Catholic Church, to which his widow and children belong. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Foresters and the Elks, in all of which he was very popular. Mr. McCarty was an excellent business man of versatile ability, and was successful in all of his ventures. As a public official he held the esteem of the community, and his home life was such as to win him the high regard of a wide circle of acquaintances. His son, Joseph, who is continuing the cement contracting business, has handled some large contracts, and in his work displays many of his father's characteristics. He employs about sixteen men, and the work is not confined to Kaukauna, some large contracts being handled throughout the county. He is a faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. and is also connected with the Knights of Columbus.
