- Johann Henrich Lohaus was born on January 19th, 1831 in Wendfeld (Wenfeld ), Westphalia, Germany. He was the son of *Bernard Lohaus (Lohues) and A nna Maria Hoeing. Henry grew up in the Wendfeld - Stadtlohn area of Germa ny. (These towns are in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, which is ne ar the Netherlands border) Henry, as he was often called, had three sister s, Johanna Catherine Lohaus, born around 1833, Maria Elizabeth Lohaus, bo rn around 1834, and Johanna Margaretha Lohaus, born around 1837. It is be lieved that all three of his sisters were also born in the Wendfeld ar ea of Germany. On March 22, 1866 Henry married Anna Maria Christina Elper s, in Legden, Westfalen, Preussen, Germany at St. Brigida's Catholic Chur ch (Sankt Brigida Katholisch) Anna was born on March 21st or 22nd, 1836 n ear the town of Wuellen (Wullen), Westphalia, Germany. She grew up on a f arm near Legden. She was the daughter of Johann Gerhardt Elpers and An na Feldwisch. After their marriage, Henry and Anna made the decision to l eave their native Germany and try their luck in America. Around 1866 or 1 867, they packed what they had and sailed to American, landing in the Balt imore, Maryland area. They lived in Baltimore for two years before headi ng west to Iowa. They settled in the Iowa town of Ossian, which is in Win neshiek County, in the north eastern part of the state. They made their l iving as farmers and eventually had four daughters, who were all born in O ssian. *Mary, was born on January 22nd, 1867, Anna on November 2nd, 187 0, Elizabeth on June 27th, 1871, and Helena on March 19th, 1873. They fa rmed the area for ten years before moving farther west, in 1877, to the to wn of Humphrey, NE. They had heard about a new German settlement in the H umphrey (Platte County, NE) area and sent money over to help build a new c hurch in the town. Upon arriving in Humphrey, they bought 120 acres of la nd in the Humphrey Township and through a timber claim, bought 160 mor e. They were original members of St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Churc h, just outside of town, but when talks came about building another chur ch in town, Henry was all for it. Henry and his family are listed as o ne of the original and first members of St. Francis Catholic Church in Hum phrey. Henry was even on the building committee, which was formed in 188 2, and helped collect money to have the new church built. Henry spent h is days farming and helping out with the new church. The Lohaus farmste ad was believed to be just north of town on the border of the Humphrey a nd Granville Townships. It was in Humphrey that Henry and Maria added on to their family with the birth of their first son *Ferdinand Vincent Lohau s, born on April 5th, *1875 or 1876, followed by their last child Berna rd Frederick born on January 1st, 1878. Each child eventually married (in dividuals from the Platte County area) and Fred and Barney, as they were o ften called, farmed the land with their father. Fred moved onto other ven tures after his marriage to Christina Mayberger in 1900, while Barney cont inued to farm on the family's land. Henry was a dedicated catholic and w as very involved with the church until his death on March 2nd, 1906. An na Maria, continued to live on the farm until her death on January 20th, 1 913. Both Anna and Henry died in Humphrey, and are both buried at the Cat holic Cemetery in town.
