- Tuesday evening, October 21st at 6:30 o'clock, Edward Kennedy, one of the early pioneers of the town of Chilton, passed to his reward in the home above at the advanced age of eighty-three years, two months and twenty days.
Although Mr. Kennedy's age had begun to tell on him in recent years, he was in fairly good health until some three months ago when in paring a troublesome corn he drew blood and infection set in, developing in gangrene which caused his death after great suffering.
The deceased was a son of John and Katherine Rodgers Kennedy. He was born in Steubenville, Ohio, Aug. 2, 1830. He came to Wisconsin in 1853 and located on a farm in the town of Chilton which continued to be his home until the final summons came. In 1878 he was married to Katherine Mulcahy, daughter of the late ex-county clerk William Mulcahy who died in 1903.
Edward Kennedy though extremely modest in his pretentions was a man among men. Honest, generous hearted and true to his friends, he had not an enemy in the community and everyone who knew him was his admirer and friend. He was always devoted and indulgent to his family, companionable and friendly to his neighbors and charitable and kind to the needy and distressed. He was a devout Catholic and a charter member of St. Augustine's church and in the pioneer days one of the factors in its upbuilding and maintenance and often denying himself that he might give generously to its advancement. He never sought public honors, preferring a life of retirement and the joys of his own household, but he was always deeply interested in public affairs of the town, state and nation and contributed by vote and voice to the advancement of good government. Though he lived more that the allotted time and his passing was the natural course of humanity, still neighbors and friend who knew him well regret the old gentleman's death.
He is survived by five children, John, Clemet and Miss Katherine at home, Wm. of Ferrell, Idaho and Edw. in British Columbia, all of whom, except the last named were with him in his last hours and tenderly laid him away. The funeral was held on Friday morning from St. Augustine's church with interment in the family lot in St. Augustine's cemetery.
