- Raymond A. Chartier, Town of Freedom, died peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family Saturday, November 4, 2006, at the age of 78. Raymond was born May 10, 1928, in Nathan, Michigan, to the late Samuel and Mae (Delaurelle-Riska) Chartier. He proudly served his country in World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving in the Coast Guard, Navy and Airborne Rangers. Ray was a 50-year member of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258, Little Chute. On August 18, 1952, he married Mercedes Vander Velden at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute.
He was employed at Perfect Patterns and Metal Products. He then owned and operated Chartier's Bar in Little Chute with his wife until his retirement in 1983 at the age of 55. Ray was an avid reader and also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved to spend time at their place in Amberg with his family. Ray was happy to pass his wisdom and skills of the outdoors on to his family, especially his grandchildren. His uplifting nature made him a joy to be around.
Raymond is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mercedes; four children: Renee (Glen) Lamers of Poysippi; Kim (Gary) Sturm of Little Chute; Jon (Lisa) Chartier of Kaukauna; and Dawn (Bruce) Stone of Freedom; nine grandchildren: Tonya Conrad, Stacy and Tyler Sturm, Shayna, Amber, Shyanne and Sam Chartier, Natasha and Nathan Stone; his sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Sartori; two great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Brayden; and his half brother and sister: Howard (Nancy) Chartier and Sharon (Herb) Hagberg. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by three of his grandsons: Jeremy, Jason and Joshua Sturm; his brother, Vernon Chartier; his sister, Lorraine Foate; and his half brother, Bruce Chartier.
The Funeral Mass will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, November 9, 2006, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, Little Chute with Fr. Williard Van De Loo officiating. Military rites performed by the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258, Little Chute will immediately follow Mass. Friends may call Thursday after 2 p.m. until the time of Mass directly at church. Committal St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established.
