- 1942 Kaukauna Times dated December 30th 1942 Verhagen brothers meet in N ew Guinea Army camp. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Verhagen West seventh Street rece ived word this week from two of their sons Steve and Ervin relating how th ey met somewhere in New Guinea after not having seen each other for two ye ars. The parents, knowing that both boys were in New Guinea had hoped th ey would meet and were exceedingly happy to learn they were together at Ch ristmas time. Ervin stated in his letter "I spent yesterday with Steve a nd had a very good time. I also met another school buddy over there. I ask ed the Capt. for the day off yesterday and he was really swell about it be cause we're pretty darn busy all the time. A fellow really doesn't mind wo rking for a man like that. I was reading the hometown paper over in Steve' ss outfit and boy it sure did seem good to read a paper from back home ." Steve wrote "Ervin is about 7 mi. from where I am stationed, so we hav en't very far to go and see each other. It sure was a big relief to know t hat I have seen somebody from home. I had to tell somebody so I am writi ng to tell you that I found Ervin. I know that you will feel good abo ut it too." Steve enlisted in the National Guard immediately after the dra ft and Ervin enlisted in August 1941. Two other sons of the Verhagen's a re also enlisted men in the service. They are Melvin who is stationed in C alifornia and Eugene who is at Great Lakes Naval Training Station

- Corpo ral Steven C. Verhagen killed in action in Pacific; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ve rhagen, 206 West Seventh Street, received a telegram from the adjutant gen eral of the War Department Saturday informing them that their son Corpor al Steven C. Verhagen 26, was killed in action in defense of his country D ecember 31st, in the southwest Pacific area. Verhagen apparently died in t he assault on Burma. He was one of four brothers in the service. He was bo rn May 11th 1916 in this city and attended St. Mary's parochial schoo l. He joined the Army in September 1940 as a member of Company D of Applet on. Early in December he met his brother, Sergeant Ervin Verhagen in New G uinea. They had not seen each other for two years and had been stationed o nly 7 mi. apart. It was a happy meeting for the two brothers. A letter rec eived by the family informed them that the two brothers had planned on mee ting again on December 30th the day before Steven was killed. Steven serv ed as a machine gunner. Survivors are his parents; four brothers Sergea nt Ervin serving in New Guinea, second-class seamen Melvin of Mare Isla nd California, second-class seaman Eugene Indianapolis, Indiana, Jero me at home; three sisters Mrs. Walter Swaninnson, Mrs. Vincent Biese of K aukauna, Mrs. Edward Staniak, Menasha, the grandmothers, Mrs. Mrs. Dora Ve rhagen of Little Chute and Mrs. Catherine Bergman, Waupaca. A requiem Hi gh Mass was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church for Corporal Verhagen Mond ay morning.
