- Donald A. Siegrist, age 91, Hortonville, died Saturday, October 11, 2008, at Heartwood Home in Appleton. He was born February 25, 1917, in the Town of Charleston (Chilton), the son of Louis and Othlida Siegrist. Don married "the love of his life" Virginia Miller on April 11, 1942, in Chilton and they were married for 66 years. They moved to Manitowoc where he was one of the chief electricians on sub chasers at the Burger Boat Company. In 1944, they moved to Appleton, where he worked for Wisconsin Michigan Power Company (now We Energies) in the appliance department. In 1952, Don moved his family to Hortonville to become the WMEC district man for Hortonville, Medina, Dale, Stephensville and Shiocton. He was promoted to Safety Director in 1967. He was an active member of the community. He was a Boy Scout leader, a 4-H leader in photography, played in the City Band for the Halloween parade, and served two terms on the Hortonville School Board. He was also a photography judge at the Outagamie County Fair and a state judge for 4-H photography. He was a wonderful, talented musician and played the organ, piano, clarinet and tenor sax. Don played tenor sax in the Lawrence Duchow Band, the Green Bay Packer Band, and the Shrine Band. He also played for many other dance bands in Appleton and Manitowoc. He shared his love of music with his children and grandchildren. The entire family played a special song at Don and Ginny's 50th wedding anniversary. His hobbies included photography, camping and fishing. He took wedding pictures for many couples in the surrounding areas. He enjoyed traveling with his son, Don Jr., during the fall to take waterfall and fall leaf pictures. Many of his pictures were on display in his room at Heartwood Home. Don and Ginny enjoyed camping at Cecil. They spent many hours fishing together on Shawano Lake. Don was a former member of the Community Baptist Church where he held many offices. Several years ago, Don and Ginny joined Faith Community United Methodist Church in Greenville. While attending there, he started a band. The band provided music and special services for the church as well as at the Veterans Home at King and several other churches in Wisconsin. He was an active participant in his Sunday school class and church. Don was always a kind, gentle and generous person who would do anything to help his family and anyone else who needed it. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia, Hortonville; a son, Don Jr. (Carol), Cecil; a daughter, Virginia Kay (Barrie) Lutze, Waupaca; two grandsons: Troy Schlicting, Aurora, Colorado; Aaron Lutze, Portland, Oregon; four great-grandchildren: Ryan, Hayden and McKenna Schlicting and Teegan Lutze; two brothers: Ervin (Dorothy) Siegrist, Waukesha and Calvin (Judy) Siegrist, Green Bay; a brother-in-law, Leo (Mildred) Miller, Chilton; a sister-in-law, Marie Miller, Sheboygan Falls; a cousin, Phyllis (Jack) Morris, many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Terry, his in-laws: Oscar and Anita Miller and Nellie Dimmick, brother-in-laws: John Miller, Clayton Miller and Harvey Miller; sister-in-laws: Lucille Miller, Ione Miller, Dorothy Miller and Isabelle Miller; and a step-sister-in-law Naomi Schindler.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, October 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Faith Community United Methodist Church (N1966 Julius Road), Greenville, with Rev. Thomas Lambrecht officiating. Friends may call at the Borchardt & Moder Funeral Home in Hortonville on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, from 4-8 p.m. and also on Thursday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name.
