Dr. James B. Skatrud, age 59, of Madison, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006. His life both before and after his diagnosis of lung cancer reflected his love of family, his appreciation of friends and colleagues, and his dedication to the field of medicine. His personal integrity and caring nature as well as the pursuit of excellence were hallmarks of his life. Born Jan. 23, 1947, son of Bennet and Alice Skatrud, Jim grew up in Manitowoc and graduated from the University of Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison. Jim married Ellen Burns in 1970 before completing an internal medicine residency in Syracuse, N.Y., followed by a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at the University of Wisconsin. Jim was board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the areas of Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine. Faculty appointments at the University of Wisconsin in Madison included Professor of Medicine and Head of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Section from 1984-2004. Appointments at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital in Madison included Chief of the Pulmonary Medicine and Pulmonary Physiology Sections, Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Pulmonary Physiology Laboratory, Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy Service, and Sleep Laboratory. Jim is survived by his wife, Ellen; two sons, Michael (Alisa) of Needham, Mass., and Gregory of Madison; as well as two granddaughters, Emmelene and Claire, who brought him great joy; his parents, Bennet and Alice Skatrud of Manitowoc; and his brother, Thomas Skatrud of Menomonee Falls. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kathleen and George Haller of Edwards, Colo.; and a nephew, Tyler Haring (Eliza) of Las Vegas, Nev. With peace and grace Jim moved from health through illness without regrets and with gratitude for a rich life with so many blessings. His extraordinary attitude and personal achievements will not be forgotten by those who knew him. Special thanks are extended to the physicians and staff at Dean Medical Center and HospiceCare Inc. for their extraordinary care and compassion and for all the friends and family whose support was always present.
