- LAST BRILLION CIVIL WAR VET HEARS "TAPS"
Brillion - Taps have sounded for the last Civil war veteran of Brillion and vicinity. Joseph Barth, 81, who owned and operated the firs threshing machine in this vicinity and who served four years in the war of 1861-65 passed away at this home, one mile northwest of Brillion Monday morning. Death was due to the infirmities of age. He had however, been ill but a short time.
Twice married Mr. Barth was the father of fourteen children, ten of whom survive. Both of his wives preceded him in death, the late Mrs. Barth having passed away seven years ago.
The deceased was born in Brown County, but has made his home at and near Brillion during practically his entire life. He was the last of the Civil War veterans there and will be buried with full military honors, the funeral to be conducted by the American Legion post of Brillion and Reedsville post assisting.
Funeral services will be held from the home Thursday and from the Frieden's Evangelical church at Brillion, Rev. Casper officiating.
Surviving children of Mr. Barth are Mrs. Samuel Stevens, Sturgeon Bay, Mrs. Peter Rank and Mrs. Anna Fritsch of Manitowoc, Mary, Tillie, and Edna and August, Henry, Arthur, and Raymond Barth of Brillion
